WASHINGTON -- The number of newly laid-off workers filing claims for unemployment insurance has fallen to the lowest level since early January, a sign the labor market is slowly improving.
The Labor Department said Thursday that first-time claims for jobless benefits dropped to a seasonally-adjusted 514,000 from an upwardly revised 524,000 the previous week. The fifth decline in six weeks was below Wall Street economists' forecasts of 525,000, according to Thomson Reuters.
The four-week average, which smooths fluctuations, fell for the sixth straight time to 531,500.
Economists closely watch initial claims, which are considered a measure of layoffs and the willingness of companies to add jobs.

I think that unemployment is above 10%, more like 12 or 13 per cent.
These figures come from unemployment benefit claims. A lot of people do not qualify, and do not even bother.
I know guys inn the trades who have worked all their lives , 5 days a week.They are now working 2 days a week and expect lay off ayt anytime, here in Vermont.
I wonder how many of them have simply lived off of benefits without updating their resume with new job skills. Then there are people who have found and are working multiple jobs while barely making ends meet.
well,yester day a whole gang of “consultants” at a federal site which I will not name were called in and offered full time jobs at the site, very unusual, usually takes three of four years. But this was done fast and was shocking to all. One is a relative so I vouch for this.
I wonder if it is happening all over. Many federal jobs were outsourced to big companies outside federal sites some time ago.
It will be “adjusted” in a few days and will actually be more than they “expected”.
Someone told me that you can actually file enough extensions on unemployment to end up drawing it for a total of two years.

Bush extended many peoples unemployment benefits for an additional 6 months during the recession of the dot com crash and 9/11. I was unemployed 9 months during that time and it really saved me from moving back with the parents in another state. It was exactly the right thing to do at the time. And what Bush didn’t do was use the recession as an excuse to spend over a trillion dollars on wasteful pork projects that barely created any jobs.
I’m still very suspecious of the 53 week extention in this article. That’s over a year of added unemployment benefits and I gurantee if congress approved it, it would of been all over the news and they would of used that to grandstand for days infront of the camera.
Saw some signs at factories this week that reminded me of the Great Depression. “Not accepting applications, do not inquire”

It is no doubt deceptive but not in the way you say. This report refers to INITIAL claims, it has nothing to do with benefits running out.
I see in my local area some decent looking things opening up, but there is a long way to go before I'd say it's more than just a correction in the level of malaise.

Um, I am an engineer. I'm not looking, haven't worked in my field in over 8 years and I get calls from recruiters about twice a month. I got the last one three days ago.

You are right about that. It starts early, too. I own a small farm and I'm always needing help with chores. I've been through about a dozen teenagers in the past couple of years. None of them want to work. I think I've had one out of about 12 or 13 that stuck with me all summer. None of the rest lasted more than a couple of days....
Only when a democrat is president is this presented as a positive by the media.
That’s too bad. I may not want to work at the same job for the rest of my life, but I am willing to work and stick around for a decent amount of time. Leaving before the summer was over (the job was complete) wouldn’t be okay.
Too bad many are so lazy, but I have no doubt that’s true.
Part of the problem is, people of the borderline Gen X/Y and Y category have always had things pretty easy with technology and everything always being a part of their life. Manual labor isn’t pretty common, nor is hard work of any kind.
