The time to beat Dede was in the nominating committee not in a three way general election.

All this proves is that conservatives are not team players.

They are prima donnas like Terrell Owens who basically gets kicked off every team he plays for.

The republicans field candidates where about half the time, the candidate knows they have no chance. Conservatives like to cherry pick and only run in republican leaning districts and often against a republican incumbent.

If you don’t take one for the team, the team will want to kick you out.

Are there any conservatives who want to run for mayor of NYC like Guiliani or Bloomberg ? I did not think so.

We have two fundamental issues on our side. The first is that we are always willing to throw our allies under the bus. If Larry Craig had been a (D) instead of an (R) he'd still be in office. Other than his questionable bathroom manners, was he really that bad of a senator to have to give up his seat?

Identifying the second will likely want someone to get me kicked out of FR. Look at my FR home page where I enumerate my political beliefs. Even if I've been registered Libertarian party most of my adult life and a donor to Dr. Paul in the last election cycle, am I an enemy? Really?

You are exactly right. The GOP needs to gauge each district and try to do the best we can. Remember when Pataki got elected? He was a moderate, but he was a hell of a lot better than Cuomo or what they have down there now. I would rather win with a moderate than lose and end up with a lib. That said, if we started running moderate candidates in places like Oklahoma, then yes I'd be upset.

I wonder if all of the "Conservative or nothing" crowd would really like to see the GOP running a pro-life, pro-gun rights candidate for mayor in NYC or San Francisco? Bachmann couldn't get elected dog catcher in either of those cities.

The dems won numerous seats in some of our strongholds in 06 and 08 by running pro-life, pro-gun rights candidates.

It would have been different if: (1) there was a primary and Hoffman lost to Dede, and (2) Dede is a moderate, meaning she is at least either social or economic conservative. If that's the case, I would agree with you. Just like when McCain won the primary, I was on the camp that we had to take one for the team. And yes, there are times conservatives are in my-way-or-no-way position. I am a conservative, but I don't necessary share that attitude.

This time, however, it's different. Neither of the two conditions apply. Republicans (or I should say conservatives) still hold individuality dearly. They may like to play for the team, but if the leaders pick someone that clearly is out of line, they cannot be expected to follow the leaders' lead.

New York politics is different in some ways from in the rest of the country. We actually have a Conservative Party and they are running someone for mayor. They are struggling to bring the Republican Party in the state closer to the right.

Also, because of a law called Wilson-Pakula, you can be registered in one party and run on another party's line--AND run on your own party's line at the same time. We are majority-Democrat but have all these other parties pulling in different directions, so it is like a six-way tug-of-war sometimes and does not submit to the usual analysis of spoilers and throwing votes away etc.

In 1965 Bill Buckley ran for mayor of NYC. In 1989 Ron Lauder ran on the Conservative line and Henry Hewes ran on the Righ to Life line.
In 1993, George Marlin ran as the Conservative PArty candidate.
In 2001 Terrance Grey ran for mayor. (And lost badly. I think only 500 other Manhattanites voted for him). In 2005, Tom Ognibene ran on the Conservative line and primaried Bloomberg.
This year, Stephen Christopher, a Baptist pastor is running. I think he has a whole 5 freepers voting for him too!
