John F. Kennedy believed that being passed over for vice president by the Democratic convention in 1956 saved his political career. That year, Adlai Stevenson, the presidential nominee, had left the selection of his running mate to the convention delegatesthe last time a nominee did so. The choice came down to Kennedy and his Senate colleague Estes Kefauver of Tennessee, who had lined up too much early support even for the attractive young war hero to overcome. In the end, Kennedy had it both ways. He benefited from the television exposure and was spared the blamewhich as a Catholic, he would have sharedfor Stevenson's walloping by President Eisenhower that November. As for Estes, except for crossword puzzlers, nobody much remembers him.
Running and losing for vice president has never been a promising route to the Oval Office. Yet Sarah Palin, even before this week's book tour mediathon, has been touted by some as the heir apparent of the Republican Party, if not its de facto leader. Right-wing devotees cheer her on, liberals writhe in fear lest she come within 3,000 miles of the White House, and the news media lavish her with attention that's out of proportion to her actual chances of a political future. In fact, only one defeated vice presidential candidate ever achieved the feat that Palin would like to duplicate, and to date she shows no signs of resembling Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
FDR, as a young assistant secretary of the Navy, ran in 1920 as running mate to Ohio Gov. James Cox,

I find this continuing analysis laughable. Palin doesn’t have to run to be effective and get an audience and give people something to think about. And if she does run she has every right to give it a try. I find it very telling how they obsess about her.
...and the Jews are still waiting for the Messiah to arrive......
Really??? I'm an independent. You can look over my postings over the last 11 years and debunk your own comment. Independents don't drink ANYBODY's "Kool-Aid", whether that be Demosocialist Kool-Aid, or Republican Kool-Aid. Yeah, we independents are against some things that Republicans want really badly (like closed primary elections). "Some" Republican notions are not conservative. More so than Democrats, of course, but decidedly not all.
"After spending much of his youth in Arizona, he graduated from Huntington High School in Huntington, Indiana, in 1965. He then matriculated at DePauw University, where he received his B.A. degree in political science in 1969, and where he was a member of the fraternity Delta Kappa Epsilon (Psi Phi chapter). After receiving his degree, Quayle joined the Indiana Army National Guard and served from 19691975, attaining the rank of sergeant. While serving in the Guard, he earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree in 1974 at Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis. At law school, he met his future wife, Marilyn, who was taking night classes at the time.
Early political career Quayle became an investigator for the Consumer Protection Division of the Office of the Indiana Attorney General in July 1971. Later that year, he became an administrative assistant to Governor Edgar Whitcomb. From 1973 to 1974, he was the Director of the Inheritance Tax Division of the Indiana Department of Revenue. Upon receiving his law degree, Quayle worked as associate publisher of his family's newspaper, the Huntington Herald-Press, and practiced law with his wife in Huntington.
In 1976, Quayle was elected by a margin to the House of Representatives from Indiana's 4th congressional district, defeating eight-term incumbent Democrat J. Edward Roush. He won reelection in 1978 by the greatest percentage margin ever achieved to that date in the northeast Indiana district. In 1980, at age 33, Quayle became the youngest person ever elected to the Senate from the state of Indiana, defeating three-term incumbent Democrat Birch Bayh. Making Indiana political history again, Quayle was reelected to the Senate in 1986 with the largest margin ever achieved to that date by a candidate in a statewide Indiana race. His 1986 victory was notable because several other Republican Senators elected in 1980 were not returned to office."
Quayle deserves our apologies. There is one and ONLY ONE reason that Quayle got “Quayled” and that is: WE ALLOWED IT TO HAPPEN.
Not this time. Not with Sarah. We didn’t have a widespread alternative means of countering ridiculous charges and media-driven memes with Dan, but we do with Sarah.
Today, we can fight back. We cannot give a single inch, nor adopt the slightest conciliation when it comes to allowing the media to set the pattern of thought regarding our candidates.
Repeat after me: Sarah Palin will not be Quayled!
After her book tour I hope Sarah starts campaigning for conservatives in the 2010 election.
In 2008 she came to a rally in the runoff election for Saxby Chambliss in GA. Saxby was going to win anyway, but because of her he won by 14 points. She did a great job of rallying voters.
She was a governor, but she quit. She says it was because of all the attacks (and I will believe that), but those attacks will only get worse as she steps on the national stage.
Per Wiki:
Resignation
"On July 3, 2009, Palin announced at a press conference that she would not run for reelection in the 2010 Alaska gubernatorial election and would resign before the end of July. Palin gave a speech offering reasons for her departure.[166] She argued that both she and the state have been expending an "insane" amount of time and money to address "frivolous" ethics complaints filed against her.[167][168][169] She also said that her decision not to seek reelection would make her a lame duck governor.[169] Palin did not take questions at the press conference. A Palin aide was quoted as saying Palin was "no longer able to do the job she had been elected to do. Essentially, the taxpayers were paying for Sarah to go to work every day and defend herself."[170]"

Agreed.
So what do you expect to happen if she got elected president? The ethics attacks would make the circus surrounding Clinton seem tame, and Palin doesn't have the east coast connections to pay for defense like Clinton did.
Excellent point!
That cracks me up, every time!
But will she have to pay those expenses out of her own pocket? If I understand correctly, that was the case while she was governor of Alaska.
Had he operated in the current media environment, his politic career would of been much different
Had he operated in the current media environment, Bork would be a Justice today.
Death Panels, dithering in Afghanistan, socialism...where is Huckabilly, Romney, even Gingrich? all playing the moderate shtick.. The economy is going to tank and there is no sense of urgency out there. At least she's speaking up.
I've listened to her talk frankly. She's no Quayle. We'll see , but there is NOBODY out there right now, that won't roll for the MSM. We'll see what happens
You are under the impression that "Great Satan" is a term of affection?
Nor did Reagan, many conservatives have had talk radio and Fox over the years and non of them survived like Sarah Palin, just ask George Allen or ask HW Bush about his second term or all the other republicans that the media took out. Talk radio and the internet cannot make some one survive the media, they have to do it themselves.
No it wouldn't, it wouldn't be any different than any other republican president and as far as resigning in Alaska, no one can defend themselves from the national media and be a presidential contender as a republican when they are a governor, living and working in Hawaii or Alaska.
