ZINN 101: A Radical’s History of the United States

Twelve years ago in his breakout performance as an arrogant young genius in Good Will Hunting, struggling fresh-faced actor Matt Damon sneered at his Boston psychiatrist for “surrounding yourself with all the wrong f__kin’ books. You wanna read a real history book, read Howard Zinn’s People’s History of the United States. That book’ll f__kin’ knock you on your ass.”

The political left loves shout-outs, and this was a direct one to Zinn himself, whom Damon actually lived next-door to as a child, and whose book apparently knocked the actor on his own behind. “Ben (co-screenwriter Affleck) and I were laughing our asses off writing that,” he recalls. (What is it with Damon and the word “ass”?) ”We liked it that the smartest guy in Boston was reading Howard Zinn.”

Like, *PING*, folks, for an (unfortunately influential) *BARF* alert.

Topically related to a vanity of mine.

Cheers!

*Bumping* a good article.

By the way, has anyone read the New Criterion piece that he links to? It’s subscriber only, or you can purchase it. I’m thinking if it does a thorough job of picking apart A People’s History it might be worth it.

The City of Newton (Massachusetts) website lists a Howard Zinn as owning a two unit condo building in the city with an assessed value of $703,000.I can't be sure that this is the same Howard zinn but I think it's likely to be (it's not a coomon name).

If it's him all I can say is that there are millions and millions of victims of our oppressive economic system who don't own residential real estate that's worth 1/10th of that.

Sounds like yet another phony limousine liberal.

I worshiped the guy when I was a liberal. He's a persuasive writer, but, as he himself admits, he selectively edits and interprets the facts in order to "serve man". And by man, he means Marxism.

My Rx for Zinn poisoning: the great historical works written by Dr. Warren Carroll, founder of Christendom University. Carroll writes history as a sweeping, historical epic, with warts and all — but from a Catholic perspective. Reading Dr. Carroll is an antidote to the Liberal and Revolutionary poison that the Powers That Be have been pushing as history for the last couple of centuries.
