BERKELEY: UC vandalism complicates protests
Contra Costa Times ^ | 12/14/9 | Matt Krupnick

Weekend vandalism at the UC Berkeley chancellor's home has complicated a philosophical battle over the best way to protest student-fee hikes and budget cuts.

UC police arrested eight people Friday night after demonstrators broke windows and other property at the campus home of Chancellor Robert Birgeneau while he and his wife were inside. At least six of those people are expected to be charged with multiple felonies for what Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called "terrorism."

The incident has further roiled an already uneasy campus that has been hit by budget cuts and tuition hikes this year. The arrests were the latest among dozens over the past month and led to vastly different reactions Monday from students, faculty and administrators.

Some said the vandalism, which capped a week of sit-ins and other protests on campus, was an understandable reaction to Friday's early morning arrests of 65 people who had occupied Wheeler Hall all week.

"People were rightfully angry," said Laura Zelko, a sophomore who was among those arrested at Wheeler. But "in the end, there was only slight property damage (at the chancellor's home)."

And yet Nancy Pelosi is worried about violence breaking out at the Tea Parties. When will the Left learn that it is the Left who uses violence to get their message across?

Funny they weren’t worried about getting shot.

Do that here in Florida and they would. Except at our gun free zones (aka Universities).

Understandable reaction to being arrested??? Only slight property damage??? This punk is trying to justify damaging someone else's property because they were arrested for illegally occupying a building. Time for the parents to punt his tush out the door into the real world and stop the college tuition gravy ride. But I forget, this is Kalifornia, home of the American taliban terrorist who was 'just trying to find his way in the world'.

These undergraduates have very short memories.

Obviously never heard of Ossian Sweet or what happened to the mob that attacked his house.

Throw the book at these spoiled brats.

The ones who should really get the book thrown at them are the high number of non students who come onto the campus for the purpose of disruption and vandalism.

I love the sound of cops’ batons cracking anarcho skulls early in the morning. It sounds like...good housekeeping.

This is lib eat lib.

These students are getting a first hand dose of what a Socialist system looks like.

Not that that will change the student view on Nationalized Healthcare or anything....

If they’re anarchists how did they organize a protest?

Hey, Laura. I'm rightfully angry with you. You won't mind if I go to your house and break some windows, right?

3 Million Extravagant, Arrogant Spending by UC President Yudof for UCBerkeley Chancellor Birgeneau to Hire Consultants - When Work Can Be Done Internally
These days, every dollar counts. Contact Senate (Ms. Romero 916.651.4105) & Assembly (Ms. Brownley 916.319.2044) Chairperson’s Education Committees or your representatives.
Do the work internally at no additional costs with UCB Academic Senate Leadership (C. Kutz/F. Doyle), the world – class UCB faculty/ staff, & the UCB Chancellor’s bloated staff (G. Breslauer, N. Brostrom, F. Yeary, P. Hoffman, C. Holmes etc) & President Yudof.
President Yudof’s UCB Chancellor should do the high paid work he is paid for instead of hiring expensive East Coast consults to do the work of his job. ‘World class’ smart executives like Chancellor Birgeneau need to do the hard work analysis, and make the tough-minded difficult, decisions to identify inefficiencies.
Where do the $3,000,000 consultants get their recommendations?
From interviewing the UCB senior management that hired them and approves their monthly consultant fees and expense reports. Remember the nationally known auditing firm who said the right things and submitted recommendations that senior management wanted to hear and fooled the public, state, federal agencies?
$3 million impartial consultants never bite the hands (Birgeneau/Yeary) that feed them!
Mr. Birgeneau’s accountabilities include “inspiring innovation, leading change.” This involves “defining outcomes, energizing others at all levels and ensuring continuing commitment.” Instead of deploying his leadership and setting a good example by doing the work of his Chancellor’s job, Mr. Birgeneau outsourced his work to the $3,000,000 consultants. Doesn’t he engage UC and UC Berkeley people at all levels to examine inefficiencies and recommend $150 million of trims? Hasn’t he talked to Cornell and the University of North Carolina - which also hired the consultants — about best practices and recommendations that will eliminate inefficiencies?
No wonder the faculty, staff, students, Senate & Assembly are angry and suspicious.
In today’s economy three million dollars is a irresponsible price to pay when a knowledgeable ‘world-class’ UCB Chancellor and his bloated staff do not do the work of their jobs.
Together, we will make a difference.

Well, in 20 years when she grows up and marries a rich socialist government slug, then I’ll come and break their windows.
