China: Classified Documents on Submarine Leaked... Intel Authorities on Alert

(regarding) China's newest nuclear-powered submarine development

Classified information at China's Weapon's Industry Research Institute leaked by hacking

(Beijing=Yonhap News) Kwon Young-suk = Classified information on Chinese navy's submarine was leaked to foreign intelligence, and the Chinese intelligence authorities are on heightened alert.

China's Globe Daily reported on Dec. 14 that classified materials were stolen at China Weapon’s Industry Research Institute which does PLAN's submarine projects. The authorities said, "Foreign intelligence stole via Internet hacking all of top secret information and files on materials used for building China's submarine."

They said, "Computers for researchers at the institute are not allowed Internet connection. However, somebody broke the regulation and the computer which stores secret documents was connected to Internet, and attacked by spies."

According to them, the researcher in question made Internet connection to check his e-mails sent to him over last Harvest Day. He saw Harvest Day (Greeting?) Card from Business Expense Bureau under State Science Industry Committee, and opened it, triggering the hacking attack.

It is also possible that the perp is an amateur who got lucky. According to what I know, this is rather rudimentary hacking trick.

Yeah, so how do ya like it, China? Lotta damn gall to complain about something they’ve been doing to us for 20 years...I learned last week that 17 of the top 20 PhD recipients from MIT (or Harvard, don’t recall) a couple of years ago were Chinese nationals.

Never thought of it BUT if you were able to hack the chi-coms or russian top secret files and somehow down load on to a very large storeage device ya gots to wonder if the c.i.a. or someone may pay for them?
Or simply come and get ya, take it and put a cap in your ass?

Since these were most likely US files to begin with, who would be interested in buying them? China has recently sailed several ships that are almost exact copies of some US Amphibs. By that I mean they are as accurate as a theatrical prop or mock up. Capabilities? We shall see....

What we don’t know is WHO would hack the Chicoms?

It couldn’t have been our guys; what do we want our own “secrets” back for?
The Chicoms know all about our defense technology and have started building it long before our own military has a clue, I suspect.

Hmmmmm - maybe our military got curious, and the only way to find out what’s on the planning table is get it via China?

Talked to a welder at Bath Iron Works once, and he told me that they all know that the Chicoms get the plans for the “secret” new destroyers before they do - but it don’t matter none because if they build the ships according to the plans it’ll be junk and might not even be seaworthy.

The renown Bath Shipwrights just re design and build the boat the way they know it should be done as they go along, and the naval architects in the top offices wisely shut up and look the other way, then take credit for the superior ships that they know will sail out of Maine rather in spite of them.

The Chinese, they say, are brilliant, but not so much in the realm of innovation and improvisation.

That takes freedom, folks - and you can’t hack that.

Well, these files would show their 'implementation bugs,' which can be useful to counter them.

They may look the same but not exactly the same inside. Different materials and assembly could have been used even if original blue prints are all stolen from another country.

Implies they were using DHCP on their classified network or the operator had permission to change the NIC IP or configure a second NIC. Either way it’s poor security. My sympathy to the families of the affected IT department.
