G.O.P. Senate Victory Stuns Democrats
New York Times ^ | January 20, 2010 | By MICHAEL COOPER

BOSTON — Scott Brown, a little-known Republican state senator, rode an old pickup truck and a growing sense of unease among independent voters to an extraordinary upset Tuesday night when he was elected to fill the Senate seat that was long held by Edward M. Kennedy in the overwhelmingly Democratic state of Massachusetts.

By a decisive margin, Mr. Brown defeated Martha Coakley, the state’s attorney general, who had been considered a prohibitive favorite to win just over a month ago after she easily won the Democratic primary.

With all precincts counted, Mr. Brown had 52 percent of the vote to Ms. Coakley’s 47 percent.

I think this covers it:

RNC intentionally laid low in Massachusetts

*****************************EXCERPT**********************

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele told his committee members Tuesday the RNC staff intentionally maintained a low profile in the special election Senate race in Massachusetts, according to a memo obtained by POLITICO.

Steele told his members that, anticipating an attempt by Democrats to demonize Republican Scott Brown by attaching him to “interfering” national Republicans, the RNC staff decided to only work “behind the scenes” on Brown’s behalf.

“The Democrats, of course, have engaged in scurrilous name-calling and scare tactics in this race, trying to take the focus away from the issues and attempting to divert attention,” Steele wrote. “One of their hopes was to make an issue of ‘national Republicans’ interfering in this race. For this reason, we have stayed out of the limelight, while supporting the Brown campaign and the Massachusetts Republican Party.”

*********************************

Steele needs some credit for his help....

The RNC would not place a monetary total on what it contributed to Brown, and Steele only said that “in mid-December the RNC made its portion of the maximum allowable federal contribution to the campaign.”

The RNC sent a small staff to Massachusetts starting in November and recently poured an additional 32 staffers into the effort. Steele said the RNC phone banking efforts have made 150,000 calls for Brown and that fundraising e-mails on the candidate’s behalf were sent to 228,000 people.

It looks to me that the RNC and Steele jumped on the bandwagon at the end, after it was clear that Brown was going to win.

HOW TO HANDLE THE RNC

When you receive an RNC fundraising call or letter, simply reply: " A donation in your name has been sent to the Scott Brown Relection Committee."

Great idea, Liz.

Ah, thank you for the update, because as I have followed this they did stay under the radar.

Calling yourself a conservative paints an target on your back....The opposition then targets you and makes anything you try ineffective....better to keep em guessing and get the job done!
++++++++++++++++

This is a good strategic point, I hadn’t thought through enough...makes sense though - lump in with independents - which the RAT press seems to idolize - and then operate from Conservative Freedom loving principles.

And I think they were there before he had a lead.

And I think they were there before he had a lead.

Yes, it says so in the part I posted.

It says. " Steele only said that “in mid-December the RNC made its portion of the maximum allowable federal contribution to the campaign.”

By saying "in mid-December", I have to point out that the election was on Jan. 19th, which is 4 days past "mid-December".

Also states that"The RNC sent a small staff to Massachusetts starting in November and recently poured an additional 32 staffers..."

Now, by "small staff" they could mean 3 or 4 people.

And saying the "recently poured" in additional staff, and applying the "mid-December" comment to the mix, we can easily come to the conclusion that, as I said, Steele and the RNC acted on behalf of Brown only after the grass roots efforts had already moved Brown into the lead.

Hence my comment about Steele and the RNC "jumping on the bandwagon".

"And let me say this, with respect to those that wish to harm us,..."
If only one thing he said was to resonate with growing numbers of people across the political divide... that was one that needs to be addressed immediately.

It appears to me the RNC is intentionally laying low in all things. Perhaps they have been given a wake up call as well.

As you I wish I never had to make such a statement. Looks like FR was off in the planetary orbit of pluto for a few hours. Glad to see we are back in earth orbit. I assume all where getting error messages from a proxy server for the past few hours, preventing us from logging in.
