The Holocaust only gets media coverage because of affluent Jews' financial backing, military might and lobbying fronts, presenting a skewed version of events to the world, a high-ranking Polish bishop told a Catholic news portal on Monday.

Tadeusz Pieronek, a Polish bishop and professor and a friend of the last pope, John Paul II, claimed that "the Holocaust as such is a Jewish invention" promoted in the press by Jews to gain support for Israel.

Pieronek told the Web site Pontifex.roma that while the Holocaust was not exclusively Jewish, Jews had monopolized it in lieu of encouraging "serious historical debate, free from prejudice and victimization."

He is either senile, deluded, or an antisemite. While ethnic Poles were better than most Polish Ukrainians, there was plenty of antisemitism in pre-war Poland. The colonels who replaced Pidulski were full on antisemites. After the war, many Poles killed Jews who tried to reclaim their property. And the post-war communist government was very antisemitic.

In so far as Poland lost 6 million people (20% of its population) and only half were Jewish, I can understand soe bitterness at what they see as appropriation. However, let us not forget that the communist government of Poland actually tried to downplay Jewish deaths, perhaps as cover for their antisemitism. Meanwhile, East Germans and other communists used the Holocaust to attack all nationalism. I see no condemnation of this. I also see no condemnation of homosexuals trying to appropriate the Holocaust. Instead, he is singling out Jews and claims against Israel. The bishop does himself no favors.

Finkelstein is a Communist of Jewish descent, who hangs out with Holocaust deniers, playing the post-modernist game of redefining facts out of existence. In so far as his entire schtick is to claim personal victimhood and turn Jews into Nazis, he is a denier, and you are fool.

I didn't quote him. I'll quote his website now though, and the Washington Post:

"In Tuesday's column about academic freedom, I mentioned writer Norman Finkelstein, who lectured recently at Georgetown University. Both of Finkelstein's parents survived concentration camps. Nice try though.

Still, this was a foolish thing to have said. However much Poland suffered, it doesn’t help to belittle the Holocaust.

Thank God that Kaczynski is not on board with this nonsense. He has done more to try to build Polish-Jewish relations than any other Polish leader, and he has been a true friend of Israel.

Michael Savaged discussed this issue on his show one day. He claimed more Christians died in the Holocaust than Jews.

I don't agree with everything Bishop Pieronek is saying by any means, however, the constant portrayal of the Nazis as ONLY hating and persecuting Jews in popular media, I know, really does grate on the millions of other peoples which were targeted by the Nazi butchers.

Considering that the Polish were (and are) very religious people, it is a definite fact that more Christians were killed than Jews (9 million Poles, and something around 5 million other non-Jewish civilians).

Now, were they specifically targeted because of Christianity? Not usually--the Nazis just despised Slavic peoples, with the same kind of rabid racism as they did others.

Was a special cruelty and hatred reserved for Jews? Yes, I think so, however, the sufferings and murder of millions of non-Jews in central Europe needs to be acknowledged--or it gives anti-Semitism an excuse.

My statistics were off. Still, my main point is, to keep anti-Semitism at bay, the purposeful murder of many millions of non-Jewish civilians by the Nazi's needs to be recognized....especially in the popular media.

I believe Jewish scholars first started using "The Holocaust" phrase as only referring to Jews, because SUCH a high percentage of European Jewery was murdered, it really was a national holocaust for Jews.

It is appropriate however to acknowledge an expanded definition of "The Holocaust" to include all civilians purposefully killed by the Nazis.

According the most authoritative source (U. of Hawaii) on the subject: "Besides Jews, the Germans murdered near 2,400,000 Poles, 3,000,000 Ukrainians, 1,593,000 Russians, and 1,400,000 Byelorussians, many of these among the best and the brightest men and women."
