Bay what? Guantanamo eyed for 9/11 trial

By JOHN DOYLE and DAVID SEIFMAN in NY and CHARLES HURT in DC

The trial of 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed won't be held in lower Manhattan and could take place in a military tribunal at Guantanamo Bay, sources said last night.

Administration officials said that no final decision had been made but that officials of the Department of Justice and the White House were working feverishly to find a venue that would be less expensive and less of a security risk than New York City.

The back-to-the-future Gitmo option was reported yesterday by Fox News and was not disputed by White House officials.

Such a move would likely bring howls of protest from liberals already frustrated that President Obama has failed to meet his deadline for closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay.

It would also indicate that after years of attacking the Bush administration for its handling of the war on terror, Obama officials are embracing one of the most controversial aspects of it.

The administration is likely considering Gitmo because Congress is moving to cut off funding for holding the expensive trials in civilians courts.

About time

THAT’s what the Expeditionary Legal Complex(ELC) at GTMO was designed and built for.

I burned ALOT of BTU’s on getting that place designed and built.

Is it even legal to convene a US civilian court outside of the US?

Oh wait pesky things like laws don't matter to this administration.

Sounds like Team Obama will end up full circle. That is back to the Bush plan. Of course he will be hailed as brilliant for being thoughtful and considering other options first. Meanwhile Bush gets hammered for getting it right the first time.

Why is it that the average common-sense Joe in the U.S. long ago came to the conclusion that:
1. Gitmo is a really good idea and place for the monsters
2. Military tribunals is the right way to charge them
3. Moving trials to NYC or any other place is ridiculous and highly dangerous.

Most people get it except for the imposter president and the inept atty general....their small cadre of un-american americans.

I'm surprised that AQ hadn't tried a plot to free the guys down in Gitmo.

A military installation poses a high risk target. I imagine AQ will try something at the Thomson facility in IL. Takes hostages in the city near the prison is my guess. Google "Breslan" for the nightmare scenario that Obama and Durbin are ignoring.

BWAAHAAAHAAAA!!

Hey! Let’s have the trial in Cuba!

So does that mean the dumbest knuckle dragger ever to walk the face of the earth actually had a REASON for putting terrorists in GITMO?

Hot d@mn! Harvard educated senior lecturers/community organizers can be sooooo entertaining!
LOL!

Holding KSM’s trial there would be a tacit admission that Gitmo is perfectly suited for what GWB used it for-housing the mad dog killers of the Jihad. That’s why it will never happen.

As a sensible alternative settle for holding the trial in Detroit.

The value of the city is so low now that a major bomb going off there would not cause any real damage, in fact it would contribute to demolishing the place.

Also, since that is jihadist controlled territory anyhow, it will just damage them.

So he might finally do the right thing but for the wrong reasons?

I’m thinking this is a Scott Brown aftershock and zero is actually worried about losing New York...not to mention the independents who voted for him.

Huh? There is no concern at Gitmo being a “target.” Can you point to one incursion or bombardment during the past 100 years from Al Qaeda?

KSM should be tried somewhere far from the media centers. Try him in International Falls, Minnesota in the winter

Perhaps my writing was not as clear as it could have been. The point I was making is that AQ would not wish to attack Gitmo being as it is a fortified military installation, posing a high failure risk to AQ. AQ may very well attack the city of Thomson, Illinois, as it is a much easier target than Gitmo.

The detainees should be kept on the island and not brought to the mainland US.
