Jeb Bush is back and some think he's looking presidential
Miami Herald vai McClatchy ^ | Jan. 30, 2010 | Beth Reinhard

MIAMI — When Jeb Bush left office four years ago, his public appearances were as scarce as bi-partisan man hugs.

He didn't want to upstage his successor in the governor's mansion nor his brother in the White House. Instead, he quietly cashed in by joining corporate boards and an elite speakers bureau, penned policy essays and gave infrequent interviews to conservative media.

But in recent months, as the Republican Party of Florida has grappled with a leadership vacuum, Bush's political profile has grown as fast as the national deficit ...

Anyways, everyone seems to have a strong reaction to this... If not him, then who? Romney? Palin? McCain? Gingrich? Giuliani? Huckabee? Paul?

Everyone on the any list has their problems. Bush’s biggest sin, “Sins of his father.”

I lived in Florida and while I don’t agree with everything he’s done, he was for the most part a better than average governor, with a tremendous response to hurricanes (Charlie), Christian conservative, Anti-Abortion, he ran the state as a physical conservative, and keep most of his promises.

He is by far a better governor than our current or previous ones. I say, “Let him run and see what he has to say.” He is not his father or grandfather.

Besides, I want my Freeper name to have meaning again. ;^)

The speech announced the end of major combat operations in Iraq. The guerilla war soon followed.

The "end of major combat operations" was MENTIONED in passing in the speech, but was not the subject of the speech. Bush's appearance on the Lincoln, and the occasion for the speech, was the retirement of the ship.

Well he’s the best of the Bush Brothers (Actually that sounds kind of dodgy....). The Republicans need a credible but electable candidate - he’s the bestr I’ve seen so far.

He was a good governor, but his name is his biggest obstacle. Being brother to “W” and son of “HW” is not an asset right now. The country probably will not allow another “Bush” in the WH at least for a generation. It would look too dynastic and imperious. A new crop of conservatives (Brown-MA?) can take the reigns soon. If Brown were to throw his hat in the ring, I can see the MSM screaming that he has no “experience”, he was just a state senator, he hasn’t served in the US Senate but a partial first term, the country doesn’t want “change” from its “progressive” direction.........sound familiar?.............

Jeb is the best. He is not a RINO. He has a proven track record of lowering taxes and closing down and darkening government office buildings in Tallahassee. A wonderfully warm man of his word. I hope he runs. America will be much better if he does.

Cmdr. Conrad Chun, a Navy spokesman, defended the president's assertion. "The banner was a Navy idea, the ship's idea," Chun said.

"The banner signified the successful completion of the ship's deployment," he said, noting the Abraham Lincoln was deployed 290 days, longer than any other nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in history.

At the time of the event, Democrats worried President Bush would use his speech and the dramatic landing for political gain.

The USS Abraham Lincoln is a carrier, not a battleship. It was not decommissioned and is still in service.

Yes, I meant to type carrier rather than battleship. My fingers sometimes get those two confused. And you are also correct that it was the ships' deployment that was over rather than its commissioned service. As clarified by Navy spokesman, Commander Conrad Chun, "the banner signified the successful completion of the ship's deployment," noting that the Abraham Lincoln was deployed 290 days, which is longer than any other nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in history.

So, apart from a couple of errors in details in my post, are you saying that to claim the Lincoln had accomplished its mission is a lie?

Still haven’t seen anyone worthy for 2012. I hope someone emerges at some point, but none of these people get it.

Did you happen to catch Va. Gov. Bob McDonnell's rebuttal to the Annointed One's SOTU address?

That post should have been directed to another poster, in addition to or rather than to you. In re-reading the posts it appears you were offering a clarification/correction to my comment rather than calling it a lie.

Just goes to show I should review, research, and verify my facts rather than just posting based on my memory of something from several years back.

There is one major flaw in your synopsis.

Jeb is a major OPEN-BORDERs guy.

That alone disqualifies him from a conservative perspective from being President.

To: VRWCmember That “Mission Accomplished” banner was put on display on the carrier USS Abraham Lincoln prior to a televised speech given by George W. Bush on the ship on May 1, 2003. The speech announced the end of major combat operations in Iraq. The guerilla war soon followed.
I always understood that it was the sailors who placed the banner on display, prior to George W’s visit.

Except the actual banner came courtesy of the White House! In every way possible, whether it actually came from a request from the crew of the Lincoln or suggested to them by the WH, it was a major screw up. The mission had just begun, not accomplished as major battles (Fallujah, Kirkuk, and the defeat of Al Qaeda in Iraq) hadn't even started...Bush was ill-served by his aides in landing as a jet passenger on a Navy carrier in a uniformed Navy flight suit rather than taking a helo out dressed in a business suit and looking presidential. In short it was a stunt!

I did and he certainly nailed it on philosophy, but let’s see how he governs. I don’t think he has enough time to build a resume for 2012, especially considering the race starts as early as it does and he will really only have one budget to propose (Kaine got to propose the budget currently being debated). I am from Virginia myself and there are some issues that I am waiting to see where he falls. If he screws up my area (Hampton Roads) by signing off on tolls on all the tunnels as is currently being proposed by a delegate, from Northern Virginia and republican no less, I will never support him again. He is not taking a stand on many issues of the issues at hand, which is concerning. I don’t want another POTUS that votes present.
