Yellowstone might go on first stage alert soon.
USGS ^ | 2/10/2010 | Myself

Posted on 02/02/2010 7:06:54 PM PST by Steve Van Doorn

Since January 17, 2010 Yellowstone has had the second largest swarm ever recorded. The swarms have been steady at about 10 miles in depth and they have subsided a few days ago.

In the past two days the depth has raised up to around 7 miles and in the past couple hours quakes vastly increased.

http://www.seis.utah.edu/req2webdir/recenteqs/Maps/111-44.html

Remember this doesn’t mean we will see an eruption and it most likely means a normal volcano. It is very unlikely we will see a caldera eruption.
But these changes are significant and cannot be over looked

Some history:
Since the most recent giant caldera-forming eruption, 640,000 years ago, approximately 80 relatively nonexplosive eruptions have occurred. Of these eruptions, at least 27 were rhyolite lava flows in the caldera, 13 were rhyolite lava flows outside the caldera and 40 were basalt vents outside the caldera. Some of the eruptions were approximately the size of the devastating 1991 Pinatubo eruption in the Philippines, and several were much larger. The most recent volcanic eruption at Yellowstone, a lava flow on the Pitchstone Plateau, occurred 70,000 years ago.

They wouldn’t tell us when they are on yellow alert.
I am so slow it shocks me.

Take a look at these two sites:
You can see on Yellow alert status the public doesn’t need to be informed.
after what happened at Long Valley (mammoth) it is very likely they will not.

http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/prepare/factsheets/LongValley/

http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/activity/alertsystem/index.php

then look at their statement again:
”An earthquake swarm continues on the northwest edge of Yellowstone Caldera. There is still no indication of premonitory volcanic or hydrothermal activity. As such, the Volcanic Alert Level remains at Normal.”

In other words no change in surface temperatures which would be highly unlikely when it was still 6 miles down and there is definitely no new vents.

those two signs are indications of “Strong evidence of magma movement at shallow depth.” which is red alert.

given that they could still between strong unrest and Intense unrest(yellow alert) it would be there call.

Where is Irwin Allen when we need him?

As of November 2nd, 1991 he's been making disaster movies in another dimension.

See if I am correct here.

No activity to speak of since 5am, by my calculations we should see a ramp up starting somewhere in the 1800 to 1900hr timeframe.

What is the standard for a first stage alert? Who calls it, the USGS?

First, Eric Holder has Justice Department lawyers read Yellowstone its Miranda rights...

This is clearly harmonics going on here between 13 and 14 MST:

Gipper how did you come up with 18 and 1900 hours UTC?
that was close enough....

The harmonics there is only 4.5 miles down that started with a 3.1 quake.

Wow this is a surprise. The harmonics is actually at YHH.
I don’t think that quake was at YHH because it is larger at YMR

Steve what you are seeing there is the quake off of the California coast this afternoon. Those are the short and long waves you are noting on those webicorders.

As for my predicition...still waiting...lol

their site is down at the moment. But earlier the waves that look like harmonics were strongest YHH. You can read YMC very clearly but on the east side of the caldera it wasn't prevalent.

The initial quake could of been from anyplace it was odd to be until you pointed out California had a sizable quake.

Steve, on a regular drum recorder, you are correct, that would be a good signature for harmonic. However on a webicorder that is just a response to the large quake.

My prediction on the restart sucked...lol

You know what is strange Steve, is that the YMR did not record the S wave at all. The other recorders all had the signature to some degree recorded quite well?

Godzilla, what is your take on that?

This is why I leave this to trained seismologists. There are many factors that could have obscured an S wave signature from physical (wave propagation, materials etc) to installation deficiency. Why not contact them and ask.
