Scott Brown to be sworn in to Senate a week early
Washington Post ^ | February 3, 2010 | Perry Bacon

Sen.-elect Scott Brown (R) will be sworn into office Thursday, a week earlier than expected, after he asked officials in his home state of Massachusetts on Wednesday to certify his election "without delay." Brown's addition to the Senate will mark the end of the 60-vote majority Democrats have held for much of the past year and give Republicans enough votes to block legislation as they choose.

Brown won a special election Jan. 19 for the seat of the late senator Edward M. Kennedy. He had been slated to join the Senate on Feb. 11, but in a letter to Massachusetts's governor and secretary of state, he asked that his election be certified as soon as possible so he could participate in votes scheduled before then. Brown did not say which votes he wanted to take part in.

Massachusetts Gov. Deval L. Patrick (D) is expected to sign an election certificate for Brown on Thursday morning, and the senator-elect would fly from Boston later in the day to be sworn in. Senate Democrats say the swearing-in by Vice President Biden probably will happen at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Congressional Republicans said privately that seating Brown earlier could help them block Democratic nominees opposed by the GOP...Brown's swearing-in comes as Obama is increasingly pushing congressional Republicans to reach compromises with him on key legislation....With Democrats now holding 59 votes, key legislation and nominations will require the agreement of at least one Republican.

Brown has said that he will not vote in lockstep with the GOP, calling himself a "Scott Brown Republican." But he has ruled out backing the health-care bill the Senate passed in December.

When T. Kennedy was elected to the Senate in a special election, he was sworn in the next day. So why is Brown being sworn in "early"?

Earlier than expected.

Brown threw down the gauntlet! Dared them to try to delay!

This is almost as good as Sarah making Rahmbo grovel and apologize.

Obamacare is dead. Along I hope, with Obama's deficit-busting budget!

I think the dems heard an ominous rumbling sound from the hinterlands and figured that they best not stall any longer.

We're making progress, they are starting to listen!

No by my calculations, 21 days late. If Teddy was the next day after elections Feb. 11 is 21 days late.

All votes in between should be canceled and DO OVER!

Maybe the Rats were hoping Obama would deploy SB’s National Guard unit to Iraq/Afghansistan/Other Killing Field.

I would not rule this out.

Yes, I am serious.

He’s being sworn in tomorrow, that’s 15 days (from after the morning after the election) longer than it took to swear in Teddy.

Just saw Scott on the news.

He has to get rid of the barn jacket-——it looks like he’s been sleeping in it.

I’ll be watching tomorrow————a great,great day.

Good night !

Scott Brown finally gets his seat. The RATS however cheated and did something terrible in the meanwhile.

JokerKirk

This is Paul Kirk. If you are an American he ripped you off for over $6000. Paul Kirk is the temporary Senator for Massachusetts. He is the senator , illegally, because the law was changed, ex-post facto , to let the Governor rather than the people of Massachusetts select him. Even After Scott Brown won Paul Kirk continued to vote in the Senate, doubly illegal now because Kirk should have lost his vote after that election. Paul Kirk voted along with 59 other RATS on January 28 to rise the debt limit 1.9 Trillion dollars. A vote that would have failed without him. If dollars bills were laid end to end starting from the sun this would go past the orbit of Mars. That is $6258 for every man woman and child in America. Perhaps the largest theft in the history of man and it has attracted no more attention then a local car wreck.

Speaking of wrecks, this may be the final blow that plunges America into bankruptcy. Needless to say this will cripple America's ability to defend itself and allow all kinds of evil now laying in wait to wreck havoc upon the world. Congradulations Paul, the new decade is only 28 days and you have perhaps succeeded in becoming one of its most evil men.
