As a Hoosier, I can tell you that you are balls on correct. Thanks to his dad, Evan was born on 3rd base but thought he’d hit a triple. He has no stomach for a fight. His announcement about bipartisanship really means “I know the GOP is coming after me now.”
Dan Coats did the same thing in 1998. So did Paul Trible in 1988. Some would rather retire than fight.
I think Bayh went as far as he could go with the rats down the road they’re taking. I think he knows that if he’s going to go onto bigger things in politics or even just keep his sanity, he had to dump the zero-pelosi-reid albatross.
