Its been practical for a long time.

Before the turn of the 20th century coal gasification was common. It was called "city gas" back then.....

Before the turn of the 20th century coal gasification was common. It was called "city gas" back then.....

It was common for use in lamps and was called "coal oil" in my neighborhood. It looked like diesel fuel or kerosene.
