This is kind of why we have chosen an HSA. High deductible with the option to set aside a significant amount of tax-free money to pay for medical expenses that are not paid by the insurance company.
The result is that we are not as likely to spend money from our HSA savings account on the small stuff as we’d be with a ‘regular’ insurance policy.

If our politicians were really honest and for-the-people, HSA type insurance would be much more widely supported, geting people weaned away from the employer-sponsored plans that have so many negative ramifications.
