Cuban political prisoner Orlando Zapata Tamayo has died (UPDATED)
Feb. 23 - UPDATED at 9:30 "They managed to do what they wanted. They ended the life of a fighter for human rights,'' his mother said. BBC Amnesty prisoner of conscience Orlando Zapata Tamayo 'unrecognizable' after 85-day fast over beatings The Guardian U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, of Nebraska, said in his own statement that ''freedom-loving people everywhere should hold the Cuban regime responsible for the fate of Orlando Zapata Tamayo.'' The New York Times
Zapata, 42, went on strike to demand a separate cell from common criminals and permission for his family to bring him food. He also refused to wear the prison uniform. CNN On February 9, we denounced that prisoner of conscience Orlando Zapata Tamayo was dying in a Cuban prison. Zapata Tamayo, one of the Group of 75 arrested during the Black Spring of 2003, was originally sentenced to 25 years in Castro's Gulag. But after spending 7 years in jail, he was tried again and his sentence was extended to 47 years. To protest that arbitrary decision, he went on a hunger strike last December. Today, his mother called from Cuba to say that her son was pronounced dead at 3 PM this afternoon. "I accuse the Castro regime for the murder of my son," she said. Orlando Zapata Tamayo, a Black Cuban declared prisoner of conscience, died inside Castro's Gulag. We will see if any of the so called Black leaders or Black organizations in the United States; South African leader Nelson Mandela or anyone anywhere in the world, will denounce this new crime by the racist and fascist tyranny that has been ruling Cuba for 51 long years. Don't hold your breath. May this brave and patriotic Black Cuban rest in peace. The peace that the fascist and racist Castro brothers denied him. Apr 17, 2009 ... What the Hell is Bill Nelson the socialist sellout doing talking about “freedom loving people”? The progressives are envious of Castro’s power!
Has 0bama ever met a dictator he doesn’t love?
The progressives are envious of Castros power!
Grandstanding for the rubes (that's you and me).
“freedom-loving people everywhere should hold the Cuban regime responsible for the fate of Orlando Zapata Tamayo”
Um, we citizens can’t do much to Castro. We have little money thanks to your taxes and wasteful spending, we have no military of our own, we have no diplomatic channels to use, etc.
Holding Castro responsible is your job, senator. You have the power to actually do something. But you won’t. Why? Because far too many of you in Washington are barely distinguishable from Castro (and probably envious of his power over his own people to boot).
Uh, I think the ‘journalist’ was talking about BEN Nelson from Nebraska.
That's right, it's Ben, not Bill. My statement, however, stands.
DITTO!
Didn’t the black caucus recently visit Cuba to prove how compassionate Castro is?
In addition to all you have said, the kennedy gov’t agreed to never invade Cuba as part of the Cuban missile crisis thing so that the gov’t’s hands were tied by the kennedys.....forever.
No, the original article from the New York Slimes says that the quote is from Florida Senator Bill Nelson (D=Socialist).
Bill Nelson IS grandstanding for the Cuban vote.
RIP.
A better questions would be, “WHO is Bill Nelson”. Nebraska has a Senator Ben Nelson, but not a Bill Nelson.
This typo has already been settled and corrected several posts back, thank you!
The US has not been the source of moral goodness for a long time now—and this death simply shows how really crass and selfish we have become.
They would rather talk about releasing convicted Philadelphia cop killers like Mamia Jamal(what ever the hell his name is).
He only loves leftist and anti-American dictators!
