Mail delivery must be cut from six days a week to five for the U.S. Postal Service to survive, Postmaster General John Potter says.
Mounting labor costs, massive debt, and growing competition from e-mail will make it necessary to make the move by the end of the month, Potter told a gathering of officials in Washington, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

Why don’t we outsource it to India!
I said USPS is using their first class postage to subsidize their parcel prices. No, UPS can’t deliver mail because the only one allowed to is the USPS. They have a monopoly. Do you know if you put a birthday card in a ups package, you are supposed to stick a postage stamp on it?
If first class mail deliver was opened up to competition, you can bet a private company would rung circles around the USPS.
btw, I think the post office going to a five day week makes total sense.
and a second btw, UPS has Sat. delivery in most areas.
I already knew that! LOL It is part of the problem.
UPS can’t compete with USPS now. UPS is hands down the most unpleasant shipper to deal with. Anytime something has to be signed for with UPS you might as well just cancel it. There’s no way you guys could handle half the volume USPS handles.
I wouldn’t miss Saturday deliveries. All we get on Sat. is junk mail.
....why do we have a postal system....
Because they are the only service that guarantees delivery to every physical address in the country for under fifty cents. It is my understanding that neither Fedex or UPS can do that. Now, whether that service is still needed today may be open to discussion.
the old agruement ofr 6 day delivery was that if they cut back to five, the volume of mail on Monday (after two days off) would overwelm the system. It amy well have been true at one time.
If they go to five day delivery, I recomend a “no junkmail on mondays” policy to balance out the load.
Most of your rural carriers are not in the union.
A few hints. Hire people for their abilities, not to fill government-mandated quotas. Dump the unions which do nothing but raise costs.
UPS does not have to actually run a set route and potentially deliver to every resident or business everyday on that route - to everybody with a P.O. address in the USA.
“UPS has Sat. delivery in most areas”
Almost worked until I checked the UPS web site. UPS has Saturday pickup. And now I checked the fees for UPS:
Weekly Service Charge for Scheduled Pickup Options
Daily Pickup
Weekly Billing Total
Fee
$0.00 - $74.99 $20.00
$75.00 or more $10.00
Daily On-Route Pickup
Weekly Billing Total
Fee
$0.00 - $74.99 $20.00
$75.00 or more $10.00
Can you imagine the screams that would arise if the USPS charged for pickups?
OK, 1st class mail delivery:
The USPS contracts out a lot of its mail transportation (read plane travel) to UPS and FEDEX, so you guys get a piece of the 1st class mail money.
.....Bob
So why don’t you CUT the MOUNTING LABOR COSTS???
mail, right... but does the USPS necessarily hafta be the one delivering mail? I think not.
Cloward & Piven Strategy.
