Waco Democrat Chet Edwards says he'll vote no on health bill again

WASHINGTON -- Once again, it will be a "no" from Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, on healthcare as congressional Democrats scramble for every critical vote.

"If the question is whether I would vote for the comprehensive health care bill currently being considered, the answer is 'no,'" Edwards said in a statement to the Star-Telegram. "After listening to my constituents, I voted 'no' on the House bill last year, and I will vote 'no' on the Senate bill this year if it comes up for a vote."

Edwards faces the same kind of pressure he did in November, when he broke ranks with most Democrats and joined all but one Republican House member in voting against the healthcare bill.

"I believe Congress should dramatically reduce the scope and costs of the bills, focus on key issues such as holding down costs, ending the anti-trust exemption for health insurance companies, and preventing discrimination against individuals with pre-existing conditions and try to develop a bipartisan bill that would unite, not divide, our country," Edwards said.

The White House and Democratic leaders in Congress are scrambling to find enough votes in the House to pass the Senate version of the bill to take advantage of a parliamentary procedure that means Senate Democrats need only a simple majority of 51 votes to pass the bill.

We'll know they don't have the votes if that March 18th thing turns into an April 18th thing, and then a "let's create some jobs" thing.

Let us all pray that it works out that way.

One democrat who wants to keep his job. Self-preservation at work.

Don’t praise someone for wanting to keep his job. He ain’t voting this way because HE thinks it’s right. We can be grateful to God he’s more selfish than marxist.

Sadly RINO Newt and Dede screwed us in NY-23. That one vote is haunting us. Thanks Newt.

Does anyone know if Newt is pro-gay marriage and sodomy like the McCain & Cheney klans?

If keeping your job means you try and represent your voters, I really don’t see how that is wrong. He still might totally beleive in it, but his voters don’t.

Politicians often use constituents as ‘cover’ when they don’t want to take flak for a tough vote or a vote against their own party. Pretty sure that’s what’s going on here.

If 0bamacare fails, many of these Dims will be rewarded with retention of their seats. The Republican brand has been diminished since 2006 and independents may stick with a principled Dim that stands against 0bamacare.
Flipping from a no to yes vote as that guy in Utah is contemplating (as a result of a bribe for his bro’) is the kiss of death in a competitive district. In the same vein, Stupak Dims that support the pro abortion Senate bill will also be penalized.
The Dims will realize that this is more about the narcissistic 0bama legacy than their own political survival, their party’s survival and even their progressive agenda. Hilary would have likely been more dangerous because she would have taken the time tested and sly incremental progressive approach. I’m sure that the MSM would have liked a do over on vetting zero.

There will be another interesting showdown coming up if this bill becomes law. Many states have passed laws basically saying that they will disregard any fed law mandating Obamacare on their states. Also, a question I have. What’s to say that all of the tax money they will be collecting for four years before Obamacare actually kicks in, will not be spent up by the Dem Congress and the Obama Admin, before then? Is there a lockbox? I doubt it. The money will be spent way before Obamacare even kicks in.

He’s just trying to keep his job.

Edwards is from a conservative district in the middle of Texas, which includes College Station. He keeps getting elected because he’s an Aggie, but he’s vulnerable because he’s a Democrat. If he ignores the constituency, he’s toast in November.
