McCain Withdraws Support from Supplement Safety Bill

A Senate staffer confirmed that Sen. John McCain no longer supports a bill he introduced to significantly tighten regulatory requirements for dietary supplements.

McCain offered the Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010, S. 3002, in February. The Arizona Republican will now collaborate with Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, on revised legislation that allegedly provides for transparency and safety within the supplement industry but without the intensive regulatory intervention proposed in S. 3002. No timeline is set for introduction of a new bill.

Hatch thanks McCain for withdrawing his support of the original legislation in a March 4 letter.

"I'm counting on you to work with me to make sure this important industry does not fall prey to over-regulatory regimes and mounds of costly government bureaucracy," Hatch writes. It seemed only a matter of time before Hatch, an author of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act and a vocal industry booster, would speak out against McCain's bill. S. 3002 targeted products containing steroids and other illegal substances, but was viewed as having potentially devastating effects on the supplement industry as a whole.

S. 3002 would have authorized FDA to create a list of "accepted" supplement ingredients, essentially eliminating the new dietary ingredient notification regime established by DSHEA. Other provisions would have required supplement firms to report all adverse events to FDA and would have mandated annual facility and product registration with the agency.

McCain became outraged when he discovered there wasn’t really silver in his Centrum.

Amazing how responsive members of Congress become to voter concerns in an election year. Hopefully the Democrat lemmings thinking about following Obama off the cliff on his healthcare plan hear from their constituents.

Interesting what a little primary challenge will do to a nasty inflated egomaniac.

But Hatch and McCain putting their heads together - that's scary too!!

If McSlime weren’t up for reelection this year, he would never have withdrawn his support for this Big Government bill.

No doubt he was already getting serious blowback on this from Arizonans.

Send a consistent conservative to the Senate: J. D. Hayworth.

Dump McSlime.

The good people of Arizona must keep in mind that if this RINO is reelected, he will re-support the bill. He is, in short, a whore.

My guess is that when he couldnt get a dial tone out of his office, he changed his mind. And he’s no doubt pretty close with Hatch.

Whatever you think of McCuckoo, he knows when to fold ‘em.

Perhaps, or maybe he discovered that his rich wife owns a vitamin pill factory.

I like the way you think.

Anyway, here’s some info on Vitimin C and where we get it from. Perhaps “Country of Origin Labels” (COOL) would serve the American people better than regulating every damn thing we eat. That way WE can decide.

Get lost McCain.
