Liz Cheney Accused of McCarthyism
cbsnews.com ^ | March 5, 2010 | Brian Montopoli

Liz Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney and co-founder of the advocacy group Keep America Safe, is being criticized on the right for going too far in an ad deeming Justice Department lawyers who represented Guantanamo Bay detainees the "al-Qeada seven" and calling for their identities to be revealed.

After Paul Mirengoff posted on the conservative Power Line blog that "it is entirely inappropriate to suggest that these lawyers share the values of terrorists or to dub the seven DOJ lawyers 'The al Qaeda Seven,'" the Huffington Post reached out to him for further comment.

"It could be worse than some of the assertions made by McCarthy, depending on some of the validity of those assertions," Mirengoff said. "It is just baseless to suggest that [these DoJ officials] share al Qaeda values... they didn't actually say it but I think it was a fair implication of what they were saying."

(Mirengoff wrote after his comments were posted that "the quotes themselves are accurate, but I think the characterization of what I said is somewhat misleading," writing "I don't think I said or implied that the video is comparable to or worse than the totality of what goes by the name of McCarthyism or to the 'crusades' launched by Sen. McCarthy.")

It was not the first time McCarthy had been raised in reference to the video. Ken Gude of the liberal Center for American Progress said the following, according to the Washington Monthly: "This is exactly what Joe McCarthy did. Not kind of like McCarthyism; this is exactly McCarthyism."

Yes! I was right!.. From http://wwx2.tripod.com/mccarthy.html "John F. Kennedy told Harvard students that "he knew Joe pretty well, and he may have something." In February 1952, John Kennedy called McCarthy a "great American patriot." In 1953 Bobby Kennedy joined McCarthy's staff and McCarthy was godfather to Bobby's first child. Bobby was always loyal to Joe."

So when dems trash McCarthy, they should also point out that President Kennedy called him a "Great American Patriot" & Bobby Kennedy worked with him!

So when they trash McCarthy they trash two of their own.

They are really scared of Liz. I think they now realize that Palin is a joke, so now they are turning their attention to Liz, because they know she will be a much tougher opponent.

SeeBS reporting on the accusers? Not surprised.

You can defend these scum but you can’t flip to the other side and make policy. Totally unethical.

It was just a few years ago that we found that Fat Teddy was feeding info to the Soviets in a bid to unseat Carter. The fat SOB should have lived out his last few years in a federal prison over that alone.

Bobby Kennedy worked for the DOJ during the Truman administration and later served briefly as an attorney for McCarthy’s Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.

You know, I read and hear so much vitriol from the Left akin to this with NOBODY in the MSM claiming they may have “gone too far” or finding people to offer a rebuke that I don’t think Liz should apologize to anyone.

Where was this media outrage when ELECTED members on the Left were calling our soldiers murderers and rapists? Where was their outrage when our soldiers were being accused of torture? Weren’t they just doing their jobs the best they could?

Don’t back down, Liz. Leak their names and let them be exposed.

Liz Cheney is the next generation of superstars for the Republican Party. I have been so impressed with her interviews on TV.

Naturally the Presstitutes want to attack and destroy her just like they did Dan Qualye, and are trying to do the Sarah Palin.

So, now McCarthyism applies to private citizens exercising their Freedom of Speech?

“I think they now realize that Palin is a joke....”

Yes, that's why the the left has been totally ignoring Sarah. Perhaps you're the one who's a joke.

"It is just baseless to suggest that [these DoJ officials] share al Qaeda values... they didn't actually say it but I think it was a fair implication of what they were saying."

Why, yes, I think its fair to point out that the Left is generally sympathetic to jihadists.

I also think its fair to point out that the Left prefers to hold AQ blameless for 911 and to blame the United States. They waited maybe four hours after the 911 attacks to start blaming the US and really have never stopped.

And these lawyers in particular have fought to close Guantanamo, fought to put CIA on trial, fought to put Bush and Cheney on trial, fought to get AQ and Talibs released from prison, fought to get Bin Ladin's bodyguard released, and now want to be trusted to prosecute Americans. And to prosecute Al Qaeda after spending years defending them. No, no conflict of interest there.

These are the kind of monsters we've elected into the White House.

He never should have had conservative credentials. Here is what he does for a living:

Mr. Mirengoff received his A.B. summa cum laude in 1971 from Dartmouth College and his J.D. in 1974 from Stanford Law School, where he served on the Stanford Law Review. He is a contributor to the books Employment Discrimination Law by Schlei and Grossman and Sexual Harassment in Employment Law by Lindemann and Kadue, and the author of several law review articles in the field of employment law. He has also published a column about affirmative action in The Washington Post.

Mabey we should have a “McCarthyism Party” as a third party. That would get their attention.

If McCarthyism is needed, Liz Cheney will do a better job of it than McCarthy himself.

She’s bright, knows her facts, calm, soft spoken, but wields a verbal gurka dagger when the Democrat interviewing her resorts to the usual name-calling tactic.
