Waste watchers? British Trash Bins Being Fitted With Microchips, Raising Surveillance Fears
Chicago Tribune ^ | 3/5/2010 | GREGORY KATZ

It's the new front in the nanny state: Microchips placed in garbage bins to monitor how much people throw away.

A pro-privacy group warns in a new report that more than 2.6 million of the chips have been surreptitiously installed in what is seen as a first step toward charging those who toss too much.

Proponents say it's a bid to push recycling. Opponents say it stinks.

"They should mind their own business," said Terry Williams, an unemployed Londoner who thinks the government is meddling. "I believe they have gone too far. It's not like we are throwing away anything that is illegal."

Another piece of the pan-optic surveillance system being put into place. It’ll be in America soon. I have noticed that whatever the UK is doing America will be doing it also with six months or more.

Yeah, I fear government surveillance the same as everybody else, but come on, it’s just a chip that identifies the bin — the same as a number written on it.

My recycling bin has the same RFID chip in it. Pick your battles people.

Pretty darn easy to “accidentally” burn out an RFID chip.

The chips on some of the bins weigh the trash, does yours?

UK folks have already been jailed for not totally separating wet trash from dry -

this new push will just increase the dumping along roads and bi-ways.

It is already here
Anchorage (at least in some areas) have been forced to use “wheelie bins” - OK, keeps the dogs aout of the trash.

These have the chips - to track use. We put ours out every couple of months. Take the rest to dump in the back of the SUV, paying at the gate is 300 to 400% less expensive.

Poor reporting. There is an RFID chip that gets scanned at the same time the bin gets weighed while it is being emptied.

The chip is just there to speed up the process and eliminate errors. They don’t have to manually enter the account number as they weigh it.

When I want to throw out something that's a no-no I just put it in my neighbor's bin.

“A pro-privacy group”

Talk about a history of epic fail. The UK has turned into a nazi state in the last 5 years. Their government has done more to their people then hitler ever did.

Going to jail over trash, this seems like a good battle to pick.
