Rastus:

Well, I think there were 2 other co-producers along with Hanks so he could not screw it up. I think the Directors of each segment from what I read really did there research and made sure that each actor read the works that there characters are based on. Given you are familiar with Leckie’s works, I hope you will come back and share your opinion on how true you think the Pacific is to those works. The other works the film is based on, as I said earlier, are Hugh Sledge’s “With the Old Breed”, a reference to the 1st Marine Div. and Sledge’s CHina Marine, along with Chuck Tatum’s account of his experiences with the 5th marines at Iwo Jima, a work entitled Red Blood, BLack Sand. The Tatum work is the primary source material for Sgt. John Basilone’s death at Iwo Jima.

So like I said, there are still enough vets living and good historians that if Hanks starts his liberal deconstructionist BS, he will be called on the carpet. Also, hopefully this series will inspire a younger generation of Conservatives and Independents who want the history of WWII and all U.S. History to be told without marxist-deconstructionist narratives.

I think the series will rival Band of Brothers and do just that, despite Hanks affiliation with it and his stupid comments that he gave in the Time interview with D. Brinkley.

Finally, I appreciate you pointing out that Hanks made those stupid comments. I think there is already a backlash starting against him over them.

“Tin Can Sailors” is an excellent book. I think that Mel Gibson should make it into a movie.

Hanks’ ignorant babblings this last week have dampened my enthusiasm for this series.

...but I’ll be watching anyway. At least tonight.

Sorry to hear that. I was in the 3rd Marine Division, 9th Marines. I was only in the clean up crew there, and did not fire a shot. Lots of my outfit did though.

My dad was on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. I have some of his pictures from those islands on my Facebook site.My dad said he shot at the wind a few times but he was building airfields.

We have several vets in the church who served with the Marines on those islands.

I think I will DVR the whole thing and watch it with my older sons. I was listening to Capt. Dye on KFI talk about it. Though I loathe Tom Hanks’s politics, Capt. Dye seems conservative and he was the senior military advisor on this. He says he put two years of his life into it, and that the acting was superlative. He was describing some of it today and it really piqued my interest.

Supposedly this was made to tell the stories of these men. How I hope I am not setting my sons up to watch anything anti-American.

I'm on it as soon as I'm done FReeping for the day (priorities, you know.....)

When all this broke, I emailed Uncle Bill. He's absolutely thrilled about all this. We saw him over Memorial Day in Foley, Alabama......he was a pilot in World War II, his MOS dictating that he flew the likes of Patton and the bigwigs around the entire theater; quite a guy.

Spent his twenty-odd years, retired, and became the Mobile, Al superintendent of parks and rec.

I always wondered how the Greatest Generation brought about the spoiled generation (and yes, I know plenty served in the Armed Forces during the 60s and 70s but that certainly doesn’t seem to be the lasting legacy of the boomers).

Almost 9.5 million boomers have served and are serving, they have always been unbeatable on the battle field, they never lost a major battle in Vietnam, but the "greatest generation" were running this country and they gave the war away to the enemy.

The military legacy of the boomers is that they were the last great warrior generation, serving in the many millions as overwhelmingly volunteers, (unlike WWII and Korea which were overwhemingly draftees), and that they don't want any more back stabbings like the older boomers got from American leadership during Vietnam, they also were not fond of the way that the "greatest generation" in the media, the publishing world, Hollywood and television treated them.

The boomers are now the 46 to 64 year old people that are running things and they have a different approach to war and winning wars.

Check the Walmart bargain bins also for Iwo Jima: 36 Days of Hell. Has a lot of rare color footage and interviews with Marines who were there - chilling stuff.

I missed Iwo by only three days, I had been wounded and shipped out on a Dutch freighter. took me 31 days to get back to the States, it traveled at 6 knots. I lost my best friend on Iwo. I named my youngest son after him.

You have a nice day and the very best to you and yours.

Yes I was there and damn glad that I survived too. I will be 86 in June and I thank the Lord every day for the life that I have, and have had. I have been married to the same wonderful lady for 65 years, and I am sorry to say that she now has demintia and cannot remember much. However I am going to keep her. (to much invested to let her get away)

You have a wonderful day and the very best to you and yours>

"Believe it or not, the entire Victory at Sea DVD set is selling at Walmart in the $5 section! I bought it of course... FIVE BUCKS!"

Just a tip. I bought some of their $5 stuff and only half of it worked. They did give me store credit when I brought it back. I think they used some cheap copy outfit.

You didn’t miss much. Dad remembered the horrible dirt that tore you up whenever you jumped into a foxhole during the nightly air raids. They did steal ice cream from the Navy though. A recurring theme amongst his fellow vets was that larceny was simply part of military life

Huh? Spielberg has been glorifying Americana since the 1970s. Especially World War 2 vets.
