The Last-Minute Fight for Bart (Judas) Stupak's Health Vote
Yahoo ^ | 3/22/2010 | AY NEWTON-SMALL/TIME

Until Sunday, March 21, few out of Michigan's rugged 1st Congressional District, which stretches for 1,600 miles (2,575 km) along the Great Lakes, had ever heard of Bart Stupak. But as the clock ran out on health care reform, all eyes were on the Democratic Congressman. "How does it feel to keep the whole world waiting?" a reporter joked to laughter as Stupak entered a packed television studio on the third floor of the House of Representatives, hours before the expected vote on health care reform, to announce his decision. Flanked by six other pro-life Dems, Stupak finally brought an end to the suspense: he and his group would vote for health care reform, throwing Democrats over the 216 threshold of votes needed to pass the bill. (See why Bart Stupak opposed the health care legislation.)

The victory was not easily wrought. This was Stupak's third scheduled press conference in two days; the other two were abruptly canceled. On Sunday morning Democratic leadership sources leaked to reporters that there was a deal, rumors Stupak quickly quashed, saying he was still looking at the language of an Executive Order negotiated with White House Counsel Bob Bauer. It was not till 4 p.m. that he spoke to the press about the deal. "In the end, like the [Catholic] bishops, I wish that we could have had statutory language," Stupak said. "But we only have 44 votes in the Senate and I recognize that we just couldn't get something through. The Executive Order is better than nothing and I have every assurance it will stand." After the bill passed, Republicans tried to challenge it by bringing up Stupak's own arguments against it. Democrats responded dramatically by bringing up Stupak himself to defend the passage of the law.

I’ll donate time and money to get rid of Stupak and the rest of the evil Democrat frauds squatting in America’s capitol.

Shame on him!!! He and the other Democrats will answer to Almighty God for destroying helpless, innocent children.

Democrats are truly the PARTY OF CHILD MURDERERS.

Republicans are the PARTY OF CHILD PROTECTORS.

Neville Chamberland sold out Czechoslovakia for a piece of paper upon which “peace in our time” was written. An Executive Order was written on 22JAN09 ordering the dismantling of the Guantanamo al-Queda detention effort. Stupak gathered political capital for years with his anti-abortion stance, then threw it all away on Obama. How much loss of life in the years to come will his actions bring? Six million....25 million? Who can believe his words any more? In a fair world, he should be reprooved every time he would show his face or open his mouth.

The whole Stupak thing was a sham from the start. I think the conversation went something like this:

Stupak: Nancy, I’m with you on the health care thing, but I’ve got to put up a public fight over the abortion thing so my constituents don’t hang me.

Pelosi: OK Bart, we both know the abortion thing’s just a distraction anyway; you’re actually doing me a favor here!

Stupak: Haha, I know, the abortion “restrictions” won’t last a week anyway. How about we just have the President make it an executive order? That way it doesn’t really slow anything down any. I’ll pitch a fit over the whole thing, but I’m with you.

Pelosi: Yeah, that’s a good plan. I just love the misdirection of the whole thing - get people talking about abortion instead of the core of the bill, then “satisfy their concerns” with a bogus “executive order.”

Stupak: Sweet. OK, let’s go out there and pretend we’re mad at each other. Kool-Aid party on the 21st.

There goes the press right on time defending Stupak as some rogue hero - propoganda of the highest order.

Lets hope Stupak was the final of many lessons that will finally teach Republicans to stop believing in the myth of moderate/conservative dems, pro-life dems, honorable dems. Stop making deals with the Devil!!!

The next one on our side who wants to reach across the aisle should be shot (figuratively speaking of course).

Absolutely - he’s on video (conveniently not “found” until after the vote yesterday) from last year saying he didn’t care if the bill contained provisions for federal funding of abortion.

You know what else I’m wondering? Why is it that this video was on several sites, yet mysteriously absent from the Drudge Report, where it would have received a huge amount of attention???

[ “How does it feel to keep the whole world waiting?” a reporter joked to laughter as Stupak entered a packed television studio. . .]

It feels productive if the media spotlight gives you an opportunity to hustle contributions and endorsements.

I study this issue in some detail - Michigan airports have also received subsidies to pay airlines to run jets on regional routes, instead of turboprops.

This money goes to the added operational cost of the jets, to save a few minutes per flight, and once the money is burned up, the flights revert to turboprops.

The whole transportation situation in Michigan has been heavily subsidized for decades - starting with trains and many millions for carferries, and then airports and back to dreams of trains again.

It’s (political) cultural - the money isn’t out of the ordinary, so I doubt it’s a bribe to Stupak.

Drudge is a has-been for several years. The only thing that made him was Monica Lewinsky sucking up literally to Bill Clinton, and he hasn't done anything else except a bootleg up on Dan Rathergate in 2004.
