Burt Prelutsky Describes California Female Politicians

“Frankly, I don’t know what it is about California, but we seem to have a strange urge to elect really obnoxious women to high office. I’m not bragging, you understand, but no other state, including Maine, even comes close. When it comes to sending left-wing dingbats to Washington, we’re number one. There’s no getting around the fact that the last time anyone saw the likes of Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein, and Nancy Pelosi, they were stirring a cauldron when the curtain went up on ‘Macbeth’. The three of them are like jackasses who happen to possess the gift of blab. You don’t know if you should condemn them for their stupidity or simply marvel at their ability to form words.”

. . . . . columnist Burt Prelutsky, LA Times

Excuse me, but SF is not Northern California, it is central cal and those of us in Northern California resent anyone who tries to stick us with that hell hole of an area, the bay area.

I agree with you- sort of. Yes in a strict geographical sense, the SF Bay area is in the central part of the state. But when many people refer to Northern California they are talking about the area north of Santa Barbara. Ridiculous? Yes of course but I didn't create this and I wouldn't know how to fight it. I'm swimming upstream against Niagara Falls. People in the far North of California get tainted with stigma of the cesspool of the SF Bay area. I don't blame you for being upset but how do you change this?

But this isn't the only case of something not making sense geographically. When some people refer to the mid-west they are talking about Ohio & Michigan and that area. Looking at a map of the US that's preposterous but when people say the Mid-West, that's what they are talking about. When many people talk about the East Coast, many people are talking about NY City. That makes me furious because I'm from Virginia originally and that's the East Coast as well. Can you get more East Coast then Miami? Or is Miami in the Caribbean? Where's the South? Where does it start? Ask people and you will get many different answers. When I lived in LA I met people who referred to people from back east as anything east of the Sierras. I'm not joking. Is Texas the South or the West or perhaps the Southwest? Even Texans disagree. I've actually heard Texans auguring this. So we are stuck with the vocabulary we've inherited.
