Craigslist seller returns fire after being led into trap(OH)

An Ohio man is recovering from a gunshot wound after being attacked in an ambush by people who told had lured him to Dayton on the promise of buying his car, which he had advertised on Craigslist.com.

As it turns out, however, the car thieves weren't the only ones carrying guns.

From Cincinnati's ABC affiliate, WCPO.com:

The victim named "Chris" – who didn't want to give his last name – traveled to Dayton, Ohio to sell his 1986 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 after listing the car for sale on craigslist. After meeting the buyer to pay for the car, someone ambushed and shot him, then stole the car.

Chris says the buyer first contacted him and told him he would pay cash for his car.

"My girlfriend's dad told me not to come up here [Dayton]. He said. 'Don't do it, make him come down to Cincinnati to get it.' I should have listened," said Chris, from his Dayton area hospital bed.

Chris had surgery Monday to insert a rod to repair his leg. He continues to recover.

Chris says that he, the prospective buyer and his girlfriend, all met in Dayton then traveled down to Cincinnati to notarize the title.

"I go to ask him for the money and he says 'I forgot the money in Dayton', so I said 'Okay'. That's when it started getting a little bit fishy," said Chris.

He said the buyer kept telling him different locations to meet to get the money. Chris said they ended up meeting on a dead-end street.

He said his girlfriend texted him, warning him she saw a gun in someone's pocket just before a man appeared and shot him in the leg.

According to the story, that's when Chris' girlfriend, who drove in a second car, pulled out a gun and opened fire.

Chris also had a gun and fired back.

"Never once did it cross my mind that I would have to use my gun," said Chris.

Both Chris and his girlfriend got about four blocks away before calling police for help.

Cincinnati Police say if you're selling on craigslist, always meet in public and tell a friend.

"You don't want someone tricking you to go down a small street where you can easily be robbed," said Sergeant Eric Franz, with Cincinnati Police. "You want to meet them in a public place, a Bob Evans, a gas station, somewhere with a lot of people and surveillance equipment."

As for Chris, he wants others to learn from his mistake.

"Don't ever take anything to them. Make them come to you," said Chris.

According to the story, Dayton police have arrested 20-year-old Terrill Garret in the case. He's charged with felonious assault and aggravated assault.

The stolen Camaro still hasn't been recovered.

Our friend’s father was murdered in his own home when a guy came to buy a car he had advertised in the newspaper.

There are scum in this world and I am glad to hear this man is recovering from his injuries.

We’ve learned three things in this little piece:

1. Chris is an idiot.

2. His girlfriend has far more sense and guts than he has.

3. Terrill (gee golly....must be an Amish name.....ahem) is an idiotic piece of street filth who deserved to die. Damned shame he didn’t.

Interesting. Had the same situation. Wife was meeting a car buyer off Craigs list. He wanted to come to our house at an odd hour. And he wanted to pay by money order. It didn’t feel quite right.

So we told him he could see the car in a Home Depot parking lot on a Saturday morning (lots of people would be around) and he could buy it if he brought cash. He agreed to bring cash so we went ahead.

She was armed. And was in a nearby car watching, armed.

I’m pretty certain he cruised her several times before he chickened out because of the crowds.

Any woman who comes out of her car with guns blazing if you're in trouble is a keeper.

He should call the loss of the car a lesson, marry the girl, and listen to her dad.

This seems to be happening A LOT lately. I guess it’s some of that “hope and changey” stuff.

i posted this once before, but i will tell this tale again to warn anyone about craig's list.

my elderly mother was looking into purchasing a wardrobe and found one listed on craig's list.

i insisted on going with her to inspect. after inspecting the item, i went downstairs to get a dolly to remove it and discovered the "father" rubbing oil all over (and i mean ALL over) a naked c. 12 year child's body on the couch in the family room.

i didn't know how to react, but, needless to say, i grabbed my mom and got the h#ll out of there.

craig's list? no f'ing way!

In my county a woman went to look at a car advertised on Craigslist, with cash to pay for it (the seller said he wanted cash).
She was looking the car over, the guy robbed her and ran. He did not own the car he was showing her, he did get her money and has not been caught. Be careful, don't go alone to look at anything for sale. And, don't carry cash. If you want to buy, arrange to meet them at DMV with cash and a title.

Yup! I heard of a young man in Texas who did this. He showed up with money to buy the car and the seller murdered him and took the money. Your advice is sound and should be followed.

They don’t call it little Detroit for nothing.Of course with high crime, high taxes, and under achieving school system, and with an urban population with gangsta cultural values most businesses are leaving. The newspaper is a house organ for the democratic party and as you drive past the abandoned housing you can still see all the big O for prez signs. But on the positive side the University Of Dayton is in the final four in New York for the NIT tournament!I just hope they improve on the free throw line!

I've purchased a few items through Craigslist, and never had a problem. When I contacted the potential seller, if he didn't sound right or worded something wrong in the email, I didn't go through with the deal. Simple as that.

When a person is sincere about the sell or purchase of an item, one shouldn't jump through a hoop to complete the deal.
