Cantor's staff tries to clarify gunshot claim
CNN Political Ticker ^ | Mar 26 2010 | Brianna Keilar

Staffers to a top House GOP member sought to clarify an earlier claim of political violence against him Friday after police determined that a bullet shot at his local campaign office was the result of random gunfire.

Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Virginia, told reporters Thursday that a bullet had been shot through the window of his Richmond office - supposedly part of an escalating cycle of violence and threats in the wake of Sunday's sharply polarized health care reform vote.

Richmond police later determined, however, that Cantor had not been targeted by political opponents. Instead, they concluded, the incident was a consequence of "random gunfire."

"Given a recent spike in threats against Representative Cantor, he, his family and his security were concerned the bullet found in his campaign office was related to a number of violent e-mails and phone messages, many of them anti-Semitic and some of them threatening gun violence," Cantor spokesman John Murray said.

The congressman "was very happy to find out that police attributed this particular incident to random gunfire," Murray said. Now "we need to move on."

I’m sure there are a few of Chris Matthews guests that have experienced stray spittle shots. I doubt there are many other people who have experience office windows being shot out by stray bullets let alone being accompanied by threating phone calls. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Odd. When it’s a Republican, it’s a “random” bullet. If it had been a ‘Rat window, I’m sure it would have been at best a hate crime, at worst attempted murder if not genocide. (They have to ramp up the charges, y’know.)

Isn’t it so typical of the media to dig into this incident in an effort to question Rep Cantor’s motives......yet the democrat’s false accusations of TP people spitting and hurling racial insults at the Black Caucus is never so much as given a second look! They just run with the story as ‘fact’ even though there is proof that none of it ever happened.

Pretty much.

Obviously, there’s more to the story. We don’t know what it is. I don’t know about the neighborhood his office is located in and the article doesn’t say. It also doesn’t say why the police think it’s a non-case but perhaps the police know a bit more about it than the reporter who isn’t doing a good job at reporting. The bullet was found in a room he “sometimes” uses for meetings. When was the last time anyone was in the room? How long could the bullet have been there? A week, a month? Perhaps the police know of a recent incident when there was gun fire which had nothing to do with Cantor. We don’t know because the article has left that out. The article didn’t say a lot. Back in the day, every reporter knew to get the whole story - who, what where, when, how, and why.

Another article says the bullet was fired up into the air and that it hit the window as it was descending. I dunno, but seems to me that’s not exactly how one would go about shooting at a window or at a person.

TI don’t know how they detremined it. Here’s the link to the preliminary police report.

Like I said, I bet we will eventually hear more. Plenty of people are asking these questions.

If some low-life Lib zealot actually did this, rather than it being a random bullet unintentionally whizzing over from a group of late-night downtown Richmond denizens, this nut needs to be found and tried.

‘random gunfire’, ‘random victims’, ‘random violence’ Interesting how almost always these incidents against the right, against whites are almost always found to be be ‘random’

PT Barnum comes to mind.

Bullets, even 22LR, can travel for miles and still have enough energy to do harm.

The effective range of 22 LR is limited to about 150 meters.

Well here was the latest local article I could find:
http://www2.timesdispatch.com/rtd/news/local/local_govtpolitics/article/CANT27_20100326-221208/333284/P0/

It seems like stray bullets are about a common as kittens in Richmond, at least according to one commenter! Can Freeper from the Richmond area confirm?

yep, just your garden variety everyday random shooting in Richmond. Why even bother to investigate? Why are we using taxpayer dollars to look into a crime-crime vs. a political crime.

Why is this not news? Where did you hear about it? I’ve been waiting for some information. Is there a story you can post? I can’t believe they are beating up on Cantor who actually did have a bullit through his window (what ever the reason) and this guy is being left of the hook for such an outright lie.

Well, I'm suspicious of the "investigation" given the close ties this police chief has to the administration:

Biden, joined onstage by Richmond Police Chief Bryan T. Norwood, also announced a $1.59 million law enforcement grant for the city of Richmond.

Without naming names, Biden appeared to taunt Rep. Eric I. Cantor, R-7th, the No. 2 Republican in the House of Representatives, for criticizing the stimulus package while favoring the use of stimulus money for high-speed rail.

Not necessarily. You could fire the bullet essentially straight up in the air with the same result as firing it at a 45-degree angle from some distance away.

This story was on all the conservative websites.

If I am not mistaken, it was even on FOX NATION.

I first read it on KDVR A fox site in Denver.

Back in the day, every reporter knew to get the whole story - who, what where, when, how, and why.

The "why" is where the problem begins. It switches over from facts to opinion, which quickly morphs into propaganda.

No one covered this story other than FOX and a few conservative blogs?

This is really eye-opening.

Hmmmm,,, I really haven't thought about this, but,,, The trajectory would be different wouldn't it? A bullet fired at 45 degrees would land further from the window than one fired almost straight up, wouldn't it?
And, I suppose that if the bullet were of sufficient weight, it could just be thrown through the window. No shot. No noise, except for breaking glass,,,,,,,

Right on.

To think that those Dem charges of that name calling were of such an extreme nature that there would be more reporting, more evidence. Here’s how - the entire procession leading up was covered by hundreds of cameras - we can see the entire crowd from different vantage points - we can see all the so-called shouters and spitters. Where are the reporters combing through this video to find the offender, or possibly security cameras at the Capitol? Let’s isolate and go after it! There is so much audio and visual tape, yet no N-word. Frankly, I think someone is imagining this. Again - cui bono? The media would love to put this on but alas it is made up.

Now spit has become spittle! How convenient!

It is a constant propaganda battle that the chemo therapy of the internet can try to contain but it soon reappears.
