China to Deploy its First Carrier in 2012

Hong Kong = Lee Hang-su

America's Admiral Willard Report (to Congress)

China completed remodeling a carrier purchased from a former Soviet country.

"China would deploy its first aircraft carrier in 2012 and launch its first domestically manufactured carrier in 2015," report by Admiral Willard, Commander of U.S. Pacific Fleet to Congressional Armed Service Committee.

Dalian Daily in Liaoning Province reported that Varjag's remodeling was recently completed at Dalian Shipyard and it is moved out of drydock and now in the water before the shipyard

South China Morning Post reported, "Varjag underwent 'demagnetizing' operation for avoiding mine(or torpedo) attack. The remodeling of flight deck and upper level structure is almost complete."

What's it going to carry?

That's where the beef is.

Is that a ski-jump carrier — or an over-sized Chinese Junk.

We've had these things since what, the 1930s?

Having them is one thing. Learning how to make them work is entirely another.

Good luck with that China.

It has various models of Russian warplane produced locally. It should definitely worry its neighbors.

Why didn’t they just steal the blueprints to one of our carriers and go with a proven architecture (glad they didn’t)? The soviets did this all the time, saved them a bundle in R&D. ;-)

It's going to take them at least until 2020 just to figure out how carrier ops work and the Russians tried to warn them that it's not easy to do. I think they are going to take navalized SU-33/35s with 12 aircraft being the normal complement, but they could go up to around 30 depending upon how many ASW choppers they're carrying.

I know it’s politically incorrect, but I can’t help imagining the restaurant staff from “A Christmas Story” trying to sing “Anchors Aweigh!”

Refresh my memory.....isn't this the carrier they towed to port and was supposed to stay demilitarized and used as a floating casino or some claptrap like that?

Wow. It’s hard to imagine anything worse than Russian manufacturing enhanced by Chinese remodelling.

Great idea. We should encourage them. They’ll waste zillions of dollars trying to make it work which might otherwise be spent on things that cause problems for us.

Yes, that was a cover story. Don’t trust them. They always do that.

There is indeed a benefit from pumping them up to make them think they are bigger what they really are, and sunk gazillions to boost their ego.

China is already doing this on their own, without our help. We do not need to demoralize our side by coming out and saying it loudly. However, we should not prevent Chinese from having pipe dream on their own.

Oh yes, I know. Just needed a memory check. :)
Thanks for the post, it merely illustrates that much more how duplicitous the Chicom government is and what their true intentions are. I wonder if a betting pool has been started yet on which attack sub gets this poser carrier first.....
