Obama Can Pick Radical Abortion Advocate if Stevens Leaves Supreme Court Now

His pick will only put a younger person in the seat, insuring the liberal vote for another 20-40 years.

How could Obama pick anyone who would be to the left of Stevens?

Justice Stevens has been on the wrong side of every major case for decades.

He knows this is his only chance to put the worst possible candidate on the court.

I have no doubt the maoists are pressuring Stephens to leave NOW.

Without doubt this one will be more liberal/libertarian.

Even if Stevens were to retire today (which there is no indication that it will be that early) ... Obama will have to go through a Republican Senate with his next nominee. It would be very difficult to push someone through before November, particularly since we can always filibuster until then.

"Although one Democratic senator intimately involved in previous Supreme Court confirmation battles, Arlen Specter, said it would be better for Democrats if Stevens' retirement came after the elections -- saying it would put another bruising political battle ahead of them -- conservative writer Byron York argues otherwise."

I'm with the Democrat senator. Although Obama nominating an extreme liberal and another brutal battle prior to October could help the October elections, I think it's more likely we could block an extreme liberal after October.

I wouldn't trade a lifetime appointment for swaying an election that we are going to win handily anyway.

There isn't much difference between the living breathing, penumbra seeking, leftists Stevens-Ginsburg-Breyer & Sotomayer. Whoever BJP picks will ensure another 30 years of 5 to 4 rulings with Kennedy being the swing vote.

When Kennedy retires let's hope a real CONSERVATIVE is POTUS and the Senate is controlled by the GOP.

The real problem will be the GOP senators who always cave into Liberal SCOTUS picks.....Ruth Buzzi Ginsburg was virtually unopposed a few years ago....and Hispano-Racist and Hispanic KKK member Sonia Sotomayor only had token opposition.

Republican talk-radio rants about conservatives going third-party....but when the GOP continues to go Liberal....conservatives waste their votes on the GOP. Cut the Liberal “Gang of 14” nonsense and get conservative.

Likely a radical. But nothing changes the majority opinion. Still leans conservative.

Well I am not sure that they would pass confirmation hearings in the Senate? The dems do not have the control they once had.

McCain was a loser, but still, it’s a pity that the Evangelical leaders and Catholic bishops didn’t put more effort into fighting against Obama’s election. They should have known that he is the most extreme abortion lover ever to sit in the White House. The consequences of their failure to fight him more than half-heartedly will be with us long after he has gone, and will be VERY hard to undo.

News flash. There is no possiblility he will not pick a radical abortion advocate. His pick will be from the left. Everyone on the left IS a radical abortion advocate.

"It would be very difficult to push someone through before November, particularly since we can always filibuster until then."

I don't think the Repubs could maintain the unity necessary to filibuster a vote on a USSC nomination. Collins, Snowe or Lugar would peel off. Luger has said many times he refuses to block an otherwise competent Presidential appointment on ideological grounds.

Do the Senators who lost elections retire in November or January? I think there is a lame duck session from November until December 31st or the first week of January. It really won’t matter if the dims were voted out because they can vote till the new congress is sworn in in Jamuary. He can still push a justice through by then if he has all the dems and one or two pubbies (Graham and McCain). (sad to say)
