Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) has quietly declared April 2010 Confederate History Month, bringing back a designation in Virginia that his two Democratic predecessors -- Mark Warner and Tim Kaine -- refused to do.
Republican governors George Allen and Jim Gilmore issued similar proclamations. But in 2002, Warner broke with their action, calling such proclamations, a "lightning rod" that does not help bridge divisions between whites and blacks in Virginia.
This year's proclamation was requested by the Sons of Confederate Veterans. A representative of the group said the group has known since it interviewed McDonnell when he was running for attorney general in 2005 that he was likely to respond differently than Warner or Kaine.
"We've known for quite some time we had a good opportunity should he ascend the governorship," Brandon Dorsey said. "We basically decided to bide our time and wait until we had more favorable politicians in Richmond."
Dorsey said the governor's stamp of approval would help the group publicize the month and aide tourism efforts in the state. ...

Thing is, it's a well written proclamation that recognizes history without glorifying or defending the south. This is the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War and acknowledging that will bring tourism bucks to the Commonwealth.

It’s just not the same without self criticism...
Obviously, they'll accuse him of racism even for mentioning "Confederate history." But it was in Virginia and in April that the Confederacy fell, so it's more of a commemoration of the past rather than a celebration of the Confederacy.
Donald McEachin is an overweight, overglorified ambulance chaser.

That's nice to hear, Guv -- but why did you do this "QUIETLY"? IMO, any REAL Southerner would take pride in the history of their state, & VA probably has the most incredible historical mpments of all 50 states!
As for me, I am a proud Arkansawyer, & have never had the privilege of visiting the great state of Virginia...but I am jealous of the history & beauty of your state. Virginians have a LOT to be proud of.

If you were a slave in Civil War America, you got free quicker if you were in the South. Lincoln couldn’t do squat about the North until the Constitution was amended.

Do you remember some years back, Colonial Williamsburg wanted to do a reenactment of a slave auction, and all the usual suspects yelled and screamed until they saw that it was more effective than all the words written or spoken about the peculiar institution.

Seems like he is causing controversy unnecessarily - why couldn’t he have just named it “Civil War History Month”?
If you were Black in Civil War America and lived in the North most likely you were already free.
If you lived in the South chances are you weren't and it would take a war to give you your freedom.
They're all busy accusing him of supporting slavery.
