BusinessInsider ^ | 4/1/10 | Gus Lubin

Since the recession compounded a long-standing budget crisis, the Golden State has collapsed into a vicious cycle with no easy way out.

Unions interfere with budget cuts. Cutbacks emerge from somewhere and the people riot. Neither the Republican governor, nor the Democrat president has a solution, except hope to hell that the housing market picks

up again.

Oh yeah, and they're running out of water.

I really miss San Diego. My wife really wants to move back now. My problem is that I’m a productive citizen, I don’t think that I would do well in California over the next 5 years.

What are the thoughts about Bakersfield from Californians? I was there on business back in 1992 and was pleasantly surprised. The people seemed down to earth and, at the time, there was still an Oklahoma-Texas-Arkansas feel to the place. Buck Owens will still alive and country music seemed quite popular in the area (a good thing, IMHO).

Well, I don’t have to garage the Vette for the winter and the women dress scantily.

Ain’t ready to punch out just yet.

I have a hard time wanting to live away from San Diego.
Born here and I have been nowhere I would rather live.
But the liberals are flushing the entire state down the crapper, and SD may go with it eventually.

San Diego was called by Reagan if memory serves his “lucky town”. He always campaigned here last before election day.

I hope his luck is still with us.

I worked for Reagan when he first ran for Gov.
Saw him many time in person when Gov. and Pres.
Also met and spoke with him.

Most of the "facts" are California's poor performance, by liberal standards. Fell from #1 to #48 in per-pupil spending is not a metric I'd be upset about.

Bakersfield is great. Conservative town. I just bought some property on the Kern River just west of there.

Have never been to Bakersfield.
There are other areas in CA like that though.

I Enjoy a large city as here in San Diego.

There are bad areas of Calif., nothing perfect but
when some on FR start tanking the state, can’t take it
as a whole, just have to name the town or city.
I have my own list.
