Newt Gingrich: 'Foolish' to focus on Michael Steele (over bondage-themed nightclub expenses)
Politico ^ | 2010-04-07 | Andy Barr

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich defended Michael Steele on Monday, urging the GOP to turn its focus from the embattled chairman of the Republican National Committee.

“It's foolish for Republicans to focus on Michael Steele as the person,” Gingrich said during an interview on NBC’s “Today" show.

“We ought to focus on defeating Democrats, and we have a real chance to elect John Boehner as speaker and to elect Mitch McConnell as majority leader,” he said.

Steele has had few defenders since it was revealed that the RNC spent nearly $2,000 at a bondage-themed nightclub. And Gingrich’s comments came only hours after RNC chief of staff Ken McKay resigned along with Curt Anderson, one of Steele’s top consultants.

I’m more angry with his attacks on his own party. He’s calling us a bunch of racists. If you want to ignore that, be my guest. As for me, that makes him look more guilty than ever.

“1.) He was stunningly effective in reviving a nearly moribund Maryland Republican Party - but he is pragmatic and some people prefer to be idealogically “pure” and let Obamas get elected than compromise and win elections.”

I think Rush-style purity is the only thing propping up the squishy RNC right now. Rush is the defacto leader because Steele created a leadership vacuum. That’s ridiculous. You think we need a pragmatist? We need BOLD colors, not weak pastels [apologies to Reagan].

America is not Maryland. Thank God.

“2.) I do NOT want the head of the RNC reviewing every expense report; I want them out raising money so we can win!”

I agree. But any fool could lead such a mobilized base. What’s Steele doing? Smearing us as racists! So he’s failing at both.

I sometimes wonder, in all honesty, if there is anyone who satisfies conservatives. When I read these threads there just does not seem to be anyone who unifies this party.

Perhaps finding some positives in many of these people that are the faces of the GOP would serve us all well??

“Steele is a distraction...”

Would you have said the same thing when Benedict Arnold turned against us? Steele betrayed us. He called us racists weeks ago. You think that’s a distraction?

“I sometimes wonder, in all honesty, if there is anyone who satisfies conservatives.”

Why not put Louis Farakhan in charge of the RNC? He calls us the “White Devil”. What’s the dif?

The night club thing is just the tip of the iceberg Newt!

Newt's problem is that he doesn't know how much attention people are paying to the issues.

Another reason why I suspect these allegations are coming from people who don't want our success in November.

Steele's been Newt's buddy for a long, long, time going back to GOPAC.

I'm not as anti-Steele as some, but I am concerned so far at the job he's doing with some of the money burns this early. I'll hold my fire until the results of this year is in.

BTW - The results are in November. That's when I can judge the job he's done, and whether he should be fired or given another term.

OK, so let’s promote Benedict Arnold to general and demote Washington.

He calls all of his critics racists and has been doing it for weeks.

Leave it to Newt to prove, again, that he is irrelevant. I got two calls today from people doing a one question poll for Newt. These calls are really aimed at fund raising. I told both of them that Newt was irrelevant and should just go away. I will not squander the little political candidate donation money I can afford by sending it through third parties. I intend to send money directly to conservative candidates where ever they may be.

It is the old republican guard, like Newt, who said nothing as the left took over education, unions, state and federal judiciaries, religious leadership, media and financial industry leadership. These people are getting in the way and need to slink off to what ever rock they crawled out from under.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Steele is part of the problem. Gingrich is wrong — again.

I’m not speaking of Steele only here. The comments on Newt too are bad. People hate Newt, Romney, McCain, there is bashing of Palin here too. Who will ever be good enough?

I worry that we’ll end up just as we were in the last two elections where people sat on their hands instead of voting because the choices were not ultra conservative. We got what we deserved in that case and are stuck with Obama and a Dem Congress.

Who will conservatives rally around that will also entice young, more centrist Republicans or Independents?

We cannot pretend they will not affect the outcome. We saw what that did to us in ‘06 and ‘08.

It concerns me.

If you think Steele and his RINO GOP will return the country to its conservative roots I’d like a little of what your smoking.

Only conservatives candidates can fix the country. The GOP
will continue to run RINOs because it is controlled by the Demrat Party.
