He was a welder in a shipyard. Essential to the war effort, etc., etc.

Damn good question. How did he avoid service in WWII. He was only in his early to mid twenties when the war started. I wonder how he got out of serving his country.

Ku Klux Byrd worked in a shipyard in Baltimore; was a welder IIRC.

Decent, honourable, and necessary work, in and of itself.

His reasons for preferring that work to military service were a bit creepy, though ...
