This is a letter from the mother of one of the Fallen soldiers, whose funeral we escorted late last year.
It is one of the most beautful things I have ever read, and I wanted to share it with you..
Dear SFC Dearborn and the other Patriot Guard Riders
My name is Suzanne Brochu and I am the mother of PFC Jordan Brochu. It has already been over four months since Jordan died serving our country in Afghanistan. Yet, there are days that the pain is as sharp as the day we saw his casket for the first time and realized it is not just a bad dream. Im sorry it has taken so long to respond to your service showing PFC Brochu honor and dignity during the transporting and lay of his body to rest. Your comforting expression of gratitude and support will always be remembered. It has taken this long to gather the courage and strength to visit, reread, and respond to the many phone calls, cards, and services we received. And the thought and concern that emanate from each one deserves acknowledgement and a response.
We are at war. War is ugly and the price is high. Yet, by the grace of God; by those who are in position of power who are using that power wisely; and by the men and women who are continuing to put self aside and willingly serve; the actual living out of this war is being kept off our home borders.
Freedom is never free. History has proven over and over the truth that genuine peace can only be paid by those willing to risk all to preserve it. The reality of that cost does not change the truth, no matter how painful. Our founding fathers lived out the truth that at times, the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of its patriots. Often times, though, ones grief and pain, and yes even the onslaught of skewered facts, can change ones perception of truth. Talk is cheap; the walk is not. As Thomas Paine wrote so eloquently to a discouraged Gen. Washington:
Theses are the times that try mens souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated.
We lost our son to war. Yet those in other countries have lost so much more. The death of family members, the struggle with survival, the lack of the comfort of home, and the reality of no freedom in regards to speech, faith, and the thought are the norm. I tell you gratefully, that even in the thick of battle, Jordan understood this. These are just not the hopeful prattles of a grieving parent. You see, we were given a gift. In Jordans personal effects, there were found a couple of pages of a journal. Aside from the usual soldier jargon (after all, IM sure he never thought his mother would be reading it), there was a window into the heart of our soldier. And what was found was a healing balm to our aching hearts. Jordan knew that they were serving the great cause of FREEDOM. He knew that death was quite probable. In that short time, he developed a greater sense of the fragility and worth of each human life. He took time to prepare himself for eternity. He expressed a strong hope that with his death others could experience the opportunity to walk in peace. He showed love and gratitude for his country, his fellow soldiers, and his family right to the end. We lost our son...he is no longer here. The river of grief, at times, rages up, takes my breath away and floods my eyes, rendering me both speechless and blind...often within seconds and never planned! But please know that even in the midst of our grief, our pride in America and her military, as well as Jordans choice to serve is not diminished. We do not regret his decision. In fact, it has given us all a greater awareness and gratitude for the many, such as yourself, who have sacrificed for this great country of ours and for the plight of others less fortunate. As Eleanor Roosevelt has said: True patriotism springs from a belief in the dignity of the individual, freedom and equality not only for Americans but for all people on earth.
Thank you for your service. Thank you for your sacrifice.
