Boy Scouts of America Found Negligent in Landmark Sex Abuse Case
ABC News ^ | April 13, 2010 | EMILY FRIEDMAN

An Oregon jury found the Boy Scouts of America and the local scout chapter negligent today in a landmark case that accused the iconic organization of covering up alleged sexual abuse of several of its boy scouts for years.

The Boy Scouts of America face charges of sexual abuse by scout leaders. The nine-member jury ordered the organization to pay $1.4 million in damages, and will now move into a punitive phase that could result in the Boy Scouts of America paying a penalty that could reach $25 million. That decision is not expected for weeks.

In the civil suit filed last month in Portland, Ore., six plaintiffs alleged that the Boy Scouts of America allowed convicted child sex-offender Timur Dykes to continue to participate and lead troop activities, including sleepovers at his home with the scouts, even after he confessed in 1983 to having abused as many as 17 scouts.

The lawsuit focused on a now 37-year-old Portland man, identified by The Associated Press as Kerry Lewis, who claimed he was abused as a boy by Dykes while the Boy Scouts of America and the Cascade Pacific Council in Oregon, his specific Scout branch, did nothing.

Dykes, who had already been convicted twice on child abuse charges, was again convicted in 1994, when he admitted the abuse and was imprisoned. He is out on parole until 2013.

YOu sue a school, you just end up making taxpayers pay, and a judge will rule that you can raise taxes so the school isn’t hurt.

"California Legislature cannot even agree on the Boy Scouts. On Tuesday, ...the majority-holding Democrats blocked a resolution to honor the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, citing the group’s ban on gay or atheist leaders."

Then sue the teachers and the principal civilly, in court for their misdeeds. Find in appropriate dangerous nonsense and sue them out of business.

Find a way to do it. Otherwise, this doesn’t end until ALL of the foundations of this society are going to be destroyed.

Isn’t that what this thread is about? How the left keeps chipping away at the moral fiber of this country? Fight back, I say. Fight them back, in court. Make them lose.

Or we are all toast.

Indeed, this is not something to cover up.

But then, sometimes you’re between a rock & a hard place - they want you to hire homos, then kick you for allowing them to abuse kids.

You use the term “Church” as if it has total knowledge of all universal Church activities. Prior to Vatican II, seminaries employed and utilized psychiatrists specifically to identify and then dismiss any prospective priests with homosexual tendencies. These psychological evaluations were conducted throughout the years in seminary. After Vatican II and some of the relaxations of strict adherence to total orthodoxy, exacerbated in the US by the 1960’s, the Seminaries changed the focus, assuming in some respects, celebacy was overarching, regardless of sexual proclivities. As homosexuals were funneled through the system and ultimately ordained, they relasped into or carried forward their homosexual activities. Some of these priests ultimately advanced within the Churches hierarchy, becoming Monseignors, Bishops and Cardinals. Because they left a legacy among their clergy peers, they were compromised. They could either take adverse action against priest identified as predatory pederasts and risk being outed our they could transfer them an hope for continued anonymity.

What does anyone want to bet that one of the punitive impositions on the BSA is for them to allow sodomites unlimited access to boys in leadership roles?

“You use the term “Church” as if it has total knowledge of all universal Church activities.” I intended to do not such thing. Yes, I am aware what happened. When priests began to desert their posts in alarming numbers, and whole seminaries emptied out, standards of admission were lowered. Priests no longer encouraged boys and men to join the priesthood, so many who were unsuited intellectually and morally were ordained. In a way there was a degradation of the priesthood. Some of those who had left were men who in other respects were unworthy. Others were tired of being treated as boys until they were well into their 30s and 40s. But all in all, there was a falling off in the Faith, a collapse in morale.

The Boy Scouts absolutely do have some permanent employees. My father was one of them. There are about 4000 full-time paid professional Scouters. However, none of them are Scoutmasters, Den Leaders, etc. None of them have direct contact (except very incidentally) with kids.

I believe that is what I said. They don’t have permanent scoutmasters.

What I was looking for was, what was his profession? School teacher?

Did it occur to you to look at the facts of this case? The guy who did the abuse confessed to the bsa that he had already abused 17 boys, but they let him continue to be an assistant scout leader. It was a bad decision by the bsa, unencumbered by liberal pressure. It was after his confession that he abused Lewis. As much as I too enjoy blaming liberals, you can’t just in a knee-jerk fashion do that every time. It makes us all look stupid.

Fine, but I’ll stand by my larger point which is unrelated to this or any other specific case. I’m not about to say that any large organization is blameless if some of its members commit crimes. I’m saying the operative assumptions of liberal PC make those crimes easier to commit and get away with, and more likely to occur in the first place.
