Should Open Carry of Guns Be the Law of the Land?(poll)
U.S. News & World Report ^ | 15 April, 2010 | Steve St. Angelo

Proponents say law-abiding citizens have a right to display their protection and that more states should allow it. Foes argue that the proliferation of guns on the streets and in the stores creates a deadly risk. Should open carry be the law of the land?

YES:

The phrase "open carry" refers to the act of law-abiding citizens carrying a properly holstered handgun in plain sight, wherever it is legal to do so, as they go about their daily lives. This includes such mundane tasks as driving to work, walking the dog, grabbing a cup of coffee at Starbucks, or buying a book at Barnes & Noble. Those who choose open carry are just going about their business while armed, just as do the...

NO:

There are only three states, Florida, Texas, and Illinois, and the District of Columbia that outright prohibit the open carrying of handguns. Only three! Now, contrary to public perception, I have never been against people owning guns for protection, hunting, or sport. But there are days when I read the newspaper or am watching the news and it seems as if our country is back in the Wild West. Brazenly carrying firearms into...

There is a poll at the lower left of the link. It is currently at 97.44% yes. I think we need to work to keep it there.

Did you read the comments. Well reasoned arguments for, based on fact, whinny emotionalism against, based on some false claims in newspaper articles.

The correct question is why are governments being allowed to infringe on our gun rights. The Second Amendment clearly guarantees our rights to keep and bear arms. Why should it matter if we do it openly or not? And why should we need laws to “grant” us a right we already have?

The 2nd Amendment is already the law of the land.

They’re using the VCDL model. It’s very effective.

Is this a trick question???

Texas almost had it ready to go in the last legislative session...

We had a Rep ready to walk the bill (file it) forward, then some folks from the OpenCarry.org group screwed it up by saying some pretty stupid stuff and the Rep said she wasn’t going to do it after that stupid move...

Texas has a pretty even split of gunowners and concealed carriers that are pro and con on the overall issue...

I personally would like to have the option to open carry if I so chose to do so...Summer months and the statement it makes at times like these would be something attractive to folks like me who want the option to do so...

Having Texas and Florida on that short list of states that need to grow up is truely disturbing considering how liberal those other states are on all sorts of citizens Constitutional rights...

I’d love to change that, but consideringthe damage the pundits of open carry did last session, it is unlikely the subject will ever be brought back up again in the immediate future...

I am not aware of this. Could someone please post what was said by OpenCarry.org? I will say that Conservatives seem to have an uncanny knack for putting their foot in their mouths at the most inopportune times, over, and over and over again, and again.....

Is it possible that infil-traitors are resonsible for these open mouth, insert foot moments? Or are the loudest among us just not the smartest?

It is something that is not on the record, but the State Representative got a visit from the Open Carry lobby (activists) and got on her case at her office about dragging her heals on getting the bill filed, and some of the wording changes at the last minute...

Most of the contingent that pissed her off were from out of state, and that didn’t ride well with some of us who have over the last 15-20 years have been in the middle of getting the carry law tweeked over that time to improve the situation in Texas every session...I’ve been glad to have been able to actively and agressively participate in those efforts in that time frame...And I plan on continuing that effort...

I wish I had heard more about it that day, but that was one of the few times I had been back in Houston, and not in Austin when it happened...

SOmeone may have written it down for posterity, but I don’t have a link for that info...

You can ask and get into the details at “TexasCHLforum.com”, and poke around there to see if its in the archives...I’m going to run in there and do a quick search for it...

But I need to caution you...The Open Carry debate is a dead horse and one that has been killed many times over...So just be careful, it is a sensitive subject...

I’ll see if I can find anything on it...

But that is just what I know right off the top of muh head...

Regards,
Steve

I read the article, not the comments. Doesn’t matter. As a lifetime member of the NRA, I’m pretty familiar with the facts as well as the lies of the liberal media.

It is the law of the land, just because many politicians and quite a few ignorant citizens refuse to recognize that fact doesn’t change things. We don’t need another law, we simply need the government to hold to the constitution.

Personally, I think states should have the option of allowing concealed carry, open carry or both, but certainly not neither.
