Should Open Carry of Guns Be the Law of the Land?(poll)
U.S. News & World Report ^ | 15 April, 2010 | Steve St. Angelo

Proponents say law-abiding citizens have a right to display their protection and that more states should allow it. Foes argue that the proliferation of guns on the streets and in the stores creates a deadly risk. Should open carry be the law of the land?

YES:

The phrase "open carry" refers to the act of law-abiding citizens carrying a properly holstered handgun in plain sight, wherever it is legal to do so, as they go about their daily lives. This includes such mundane tasks as driving to work, walking the dog, grabbing a cup of coffee at Starbucks, or buying a book at Barnes & Noble. Those who choose open carry are just going about their business while armed, just as do the...

NO:

There are only three states, Florida, Texas, and Illinois, and the District of Columbia that outright prohibit the open carrying of handguns. Only three! Now, contrary to public perception, I have never been against people owning guns for protection, hunting, or sport. But there are days when I read the newspaper or am watching the news and it seems as if our country is back in the Wild West. Brazenly carrying firearms into...

“Brazenly carrying firearms into restaurants and bars and schools and churches creates a situation that is intimidating to families, and poses risks to law enforcement and to the community.”
This scumbag lib needs to be tossed out of office at the next election. Her editorial is full of wild exaggerations and outright lies.

Does Texas ban open carry everywhere in the state? Or just the incorporated cities?

Now for the hard part, getting GOVERNMENT out of the equation. This is an unjust power they have stolen.

We need to take it back.

"Laws of any State to the contrary notwithstanding..."

We have a Right to Keep and Bear Arms. The Right is not limited to open or concealed "bearing" of "arms". Doing so should be left entirely up to the individual. Give the States wiggle room on "allowing" open/concealed and next they will be using that as justification for other infringements.

That is how we got to where we are at currently.

Personally, I favor allowing both open and concealed carry. However, I don’t believe a state requiring arms to be carried either concealed or openly would violate the 2nd Amendment.

"Laws of Any State to the Contrary Notwithstanding". "Shall not be infringed".

Does it need to be spelled out any clearer?

It’s too bad about Texas and Florida not allowing open carry. Here in Ohio open carry is allowed and Ohio also has a “shall issue” CCW license. This is a very good thing, because if I’m at Wally World and I stretch to reach something on a high shelf and my big ‘ol Taurus PT92 shows, I’m good with the law. As I understand it, if I were in Texas or Florida I would be breaking the law.

So (if I’m correct about TX and Fl) you folks in those states should work hard to get open carry to pass even if you have a CCW license.

Stevie,

Who was the rep. I’d like to get Laubenberg (my rep) on this next session who was carrying the open carry bill?

I’m going to join TSRA and try to change their minds on open carry which for some reason they oppose.

Ironically, there are quite a few pro-”concealed” carry folks who do not want open carry passed...

Now before anyone goes thermonuclear on this, be aware, these very same people do understand that argument for open carry, but do not want it passed because it would require a fundamental change to the Texas CHL law and would open the door for businesses to post “no gun zone” signage that is allowed per the Texas penal code and the Texas CHL law...

So I am a little bent on the whole issue...I would like the choice to open carry when I choose to do so, but I do not want it if it cannot be worked out to not effect the restrictions against law abiding citizens who are qualified to carry in Texas and those who carry due to a reciprocity agreement with their state carry permits...

We will still work to get past those hurdles, and somewhere down the road we’ll get it filed and passed...

If I get into office, I promised a NRA Board of Director friend of mine I would without any reservation walk it myself and file it as my first official act...

He has no reason to ever doubt I would not do that, matter of fact I would be looking for him and the drafted bill (as is)...

Yes, it is against the law anywhere in the state of Texas...

Been that way since the 1870’s IIRC (might have been right after the war)...
