(JOHNSTOWN, PA) Republican 12th Congressional District candidate William Russell today called on U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus to reconsider his decision to name the 10th San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship after the late Rep. John P. Murtha. Russell called the decision an insult to all the brave men and women serving in uniform, as a result of Mr. Murthas 2006 comments calling Marines cold-blooded killers. Russell also pointed out that that Navy tradition calls for the naming of San Antonio class ships after famous war battles and not former Congressmen.
Even the media is questioning Secretary Mabuss decision to name a new ship after Mr. Murtha, Russell said. The Washington Times called it (Mr. Murthas) highest undeserved honor, and as a veteran I find this particularly offensive. In fact, I stood up against Mr. Murthas comments back in 2008 when it was a matter of conviction and not just political expediency. I was even threatened for my position of defending those brave Marines.
Russell has called on veterans groups around the country to express their displeasure with the Navy Secretarys decision.
We should push for a law which provents the USN from naming ships after politicians. The old battle names and famous ship names was great for carriers. Destroyers for medal of honor winners and other real heros. Etc.
The egos of our polticians have gotten way to big when they become famous for spending our money.
That's an interesting idea and I haven't a clue whether that's available somewhere, how about you Smooth?
What’s done is done...I think if a ship is unnamed then the Dems would be the first to unname the USS Reagan, etc.
It would certainly make for an interesting debate. To see Democrats publicly state which shipnames they approved of and which they wanted unnamed would be an excellent way to expose their rancid ideological preferences to the American people. I say bring it on!
I've tried googling to no avail. There must be a list somewhere in this virtually infinite world wide web we inhabit!!! LOL!, I guess it's just a matter of knowing the correct search words.
I tried some googling also with no luck and checked History at the House site but it only gives votes, Speakers and Leaders in previous Congresses (sp)? :)
[Chessani's] Attorney Brian Rooney believes that Murtha made his "cold blood" statement for political gain:
"In my opinion, it's clear it was done during the election cycle, it was done to bolster himself in the party," the attorney said. "He was vying for a leadership position, and if he had to throw some Marines under the bus to do so, that was the cost of power for him." [ mypetjawa.mu.nu]
Done
Naming a U.S. Navy ship for recently deceased Rep. John Murtha is a disgusting act because Murtha himself was a disgrace, Orson Swindle, Vietnam POW and decorated Marine Corps veteran.
Running against a dead traitor who doesn’t deserve squat..
