SEIU announces Arizona boycott By Eric Zimmermann - 05/06/10 11:53 AM ET
One of the nation's biggest labor organizations announced today it will boycott Arizona.
The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) said its 2.2 million members will not attend any meetings or conventions in Arizona as long as the new immigration law is in place.
On behalf of working families and the more than 8 million residents of Arizona, we will not back down until the Arizona state legislature, the courts or the Federal Government invalidates this dangerous and discriminatory law," said Eliseo Medina, SEIU Executive Vice President.
SEIU joins other civil rights groups, including National Council of La Raza, in boycotting the state.
Tourism is a significant part of Arizona's economy, and boycotters hope that staying out of the state will pressure the legislature to repeal the law.
Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, has urged a boycott of his own state.
Big deal. We are about to enter into the “Hot Summer” months and Arizona doesn’t have too many conventions during that period. Kind of hard to play Golf in 115 degrees (Although I did it once...but only once)
Fire all SEIU members NOW!
So, uh, the SEIU will refuse to beat up elderly people at Tea Parties in Arizona?
Late and then spend the day in the bathroom.
GOVERNMENT UNIONS
So they have no problem accepting gov’t funds (including money from Arizona residents) but now they want to boycott the state? What if the boycott hurts SEIU workers in the state?
Thank you for that. Great song.
Yeah, like how you didn't back down when Kenneth Gladney was minding HIS own business? Jerks.
I wish we could get them to boycott Illinois.
THIS IS NOT A UNION. THIS IS A POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE.
Wrongo. The SEIU is Obama’s version of the Nazi S.A. Just watch how they will be used over the next few years...Brownshirt street thugs.
Supporting Arizona can involve as little as visiting commercial websites in the State through ad revenue associated with increased viewership.
The expanded RICO laws of 1996 allow YOU, a private citizen, to sue them.
Sorry, I disagree. Much as I despise the leadership of the SEIU, I am positive there are members who are hard-working guys and gals trying to make an honest living. Why take it out on them? I'd be willing to wager none of the rank and file in Arizona were consulted on this - they stand to lose their jobs if a boycott is effective. The legal-resident members of the SEIU in Arizona are probably silently cheering that some of the illegals who depress their wages are going to be cleared out.
This is a leadership decision and the leadership of the SEIU has to be the object of any response. Just MHO.
They would quit the union if they felt that way. A lot are government worthless paper pushers.
A page from the Rev Jackson’s playbook!
Further, are there companies whose workers are all/ mostly SEIU?
Certainly would have to take that into account in shopping.
Yeah its too much to expect our govt to enforce laws.
Let the SEIU hold it’s winter conventions in Detroit....
