Mosque going up in NYC building damaged on 9/11

NEW YORK (AP) - In a 13-story building, damaged by debris from the Sept. 11 airliners that brought down the World Trade Center and soon to become a mosque, some see the bridging of a cultural divide and an opportunity to serve a burgeoning, peaceful religious population. Others see a painful reminder of the religious extremism that killed their loved ones.

Two Muslim organizations have partnered to open the mosque and cultural center in lower Manhattan, saying the $100 million project will create a venue for mainstream Islam and a counterbalance to radicalism. It earned a key endorsement this week from influential community leaders.

But some 9/11 victims' families said they were angered that it would be built so close to where their relatives died.

"I don't like it," said Evelyn Pettigano, who lost a sister in the attacks, during a phone interview on Thursday. "I'm not prejudiced. ... It's too close to the area where our family members were murdered."

But the growing number of congregants at the only other nearby mosque, open only one day a week, created a need for an additional space for Muslim prayer in the neighborhood, said Daisy Khan, the executive director of the American Society for Muslim Advancement and a board member of the Cordoba Initiative, the two organizations sponsoring the project.

The history associated with the building, a former Burlington Coat Factory store that closed after being damaged on 9/11, was a reason to pick it for the project, she said.

...saying the $100 million project will create a venue for mainstream Islam and a counterbalance to radicalism.

Even if this is true (a dubious proposition), it is extremely poor taste and lack of consideration for the feelings of others to place a mosque at that location. It would actually be quite fitting, and show equal consideration, to open up a butcher shop next door (as if Bloomberg and the other Muslim apologists would allow that).

Compassionate people would not do this. That they do so is a testament to their lack of compassion (at best).

"Daisy Khan, the executive director of the American Society for Muslim Advancement and a board member of the Cordoba Initiative, the two organizations sponsoring the project."

To show you how brazen this enemy is and how craven our leaders are, here's the meaning of Cordoba to Muslim today:

Brief Europe: Muslims stopped from praying in mosque

Two Muslim tourists were arrested when they tried to pray inside Córdoba’s famous former mosque in Spain, breaking a ban imposed by the Roman Catholic Church. Half a dozen Austrian Muslims knelt to pray at the same time in the vast marble building, which was converted to a cathedral in the 13th century after Muslims were driven from Spain. The two men who were detained were part of a group of 118 Austrian Muslims on an organised tour for young European Muslims. All bought tourist tickets for a tour of the cathedral on Wednesday. The six who started to pray faced charges of disturbing public order when they appeared before a judge in Córdoba. The Great Mosque of Córdoba was converted into a Christian church in 1236 after King Ferdinand III of Castile recaptured the city from the Muslims. The building later became the modern-day Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption

Muslim colonists make claims to Christian lands in the name of Allah and tell the Dhimmis it's as a "counterbalance to radicalism."

For Americans to allow them to put this by "Ground Zero", would be like allowing the Japanese to build a Shinto shrine at Pearl Harbor during WWII.

Yes, I remember the original story.
I tried to get some interest going in it,myself having
been involved in anti-Developer/Historic Preservation
issues, and could get none. I am still game , if you have any ideas for strategizing. I live near NYC, 20 miles from the GW Bridge.

I get to NYC quite regularly and I usually get down to a major electronics store located minutes from Ground Zero. When this “mosque” opens I'll make it a point to stop by and spray paint images of that pervert,Mo Hammered,at the entrance.

If New Yorkers accept this, I certainly won’t feel bad for them if/when they get nuked.

(I wonder if muslim women are considered as dirty as breeding female dogs in America as they are in the middle east and therefore NOT allowed to pray with their husbands in the mosque proper, and must go to the womens' area in the basement. Anyone know if American female muslims are allowed to kneel down and pray alongside their husbands?)

Hey! Orthodox Jews separate men and women at worship (for the sake of modesty).

They are everywhere.

A group made up of forty muslim families want to build a 12,000 sf mosque on Wilson Pike in Brentwood, TN. The guy who is fronting the project has ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. I wonder where the money to build is coming from? Saudia Arabia, perhaps?

Please, please, please, New York. Don’t let this happen.

I occasionally used to shop at that Burlington Coat Factory and when I saw that it had been destroyed by the Muslim attacks on 9/11, it seemed to me to be symbolic of the fact that they just wanted to destroy us, even the places where perfectly harmless, not even wealthy or well-employed, people like me shopped.

The place is very undistinguished, but to think that Islam is setting up its disgusting, foul, stinking shrine in that spot is horrendous.

I live in NE Florida. There are many unused rural black churches around here (the black population no longer goes to church or has died or moved away or is in jail) and the Muslims are buying them up and calling them mosques.

I don’t blame that lady. She shouldn’t have to declare that she is not prejudiced either. It should NOT go there. It should NOT go there. What the hell is the matter with NYC anyway???

If they can have a call to prayer...then let the bells of all the churches ring like they used to.

I’m sure this is no big deal to the average New Yorker. You know- the enemy of my enemy is my friend, and all that.
