New report illustrates Inland region's continuing demographic shift (Cali)

The Inland area had the biggest growth in Latino population of any metropolitan area in the U.S. in the 2000s and had one of the biggest losses of white, non-Hispanic residents, a new report found.

The study, released Saturday by the Brookings Institution, in Washington, D.C., also concluded that the region had one of the least-educated work forces in the nation, at a time when an increasing number of jobs require a college degree. The report compared the nation's 100 largest metropolitan areas between 2000 and 2008. Most data were from the U.S. Census Bureau's annual survey of 3 million households. The Inland area includes all of Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

The report found that the region had the 10th highest percentage of non-whites -- more than 60 percent -- in the country; offering a glimpse at the demographic future of a country in which whites are projected to become a minority by 2042.

Illegals are not immigrants. They are colonists

I saw the posts agreeing with you. I beg to differ: colonists bring their own tools and build and settle. The illegals are locusts, who simply move in, scavenge and then move one if the pickings get too slim. Sadly for LosAngelenos, who are a resilient bunch, the pickings remain rich, so the locusts remain in place.

Exactly why we got the Hell out of Southern California (south of the I.E.) (final moving day is today - Praise God!). It is horrific here - hard to find jobs at all, practically none if you don’t speak Spanish, they refuse to learn English, the cops (at least in our neighborhood) favor the illegals over the citizens, high crime rate, high taxes, rude attitude.

Actually they are neither - they are criminals and should be treated as such.

My father, aunt, stepfather, step uncle and almost all of their friends were LEGAL IMMIGRANTS (from post war Germany and Serbia). My stepfather spent 18 months in a refugee camp in Italy working all day for a bowl of pasta for A CHANCE to come to this country. They all learned English, all became citizens, all flew the American flag proudly and all obeyed the law.

I have no issue with immigration, but I DO have an issue with these ‘line cutting’ criminals.

BTW, the above ‘rant’ got me kicked off US District court jury selection once. Too many other potential jurors agreed with me. Go figure.

From the L. A. Times

1. 40% of all workers in L. A.. County ( L. A. County has 10.2 million people) are working for cash and not paying taxes.
This is because they are predominantly illegal immigrants working without a green card.
2. 95% of warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens.
3. 75% of people on the most wanted list in Los Angeles are illegal aliens.
4. Over 2/3 of all births in Los Angeles County are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal, whose births were paid for by taxpayers.
5. Nearly 35% of all inmates in California detention centersare Mexican nationals here illegally.
6. Over 300,000 illegal aliens in Los Angeles County are living in garages.
7... The FBI reports half of all gang members in Los Angeles are most likely illegal aliens from south of the border.
8 Nearly 60% of all occupants of HUD properties are illegal.
9. 21 radio stations in L. A. are Spanish speaking.
10. In L.. A. County 5.1 million people speak English, 3.9 million speak Spanish.. (There are 10.2 million people in L. A. County .)

(All 10 of the above facts were published in the Los Angeles Times)

Less than 2% of illegal aliens are picking our crops, but 29% are on welfare. Over 70% of the United States ‘ annual population growth(and over 90% of California , Florida , and New York ) results from immigration. 29% of inmates in federal prisons are illegal aliens .

Regarding the photo in post #2....I don’t know where this was taken.

BUT...there are plenty of such ‘colonias’ right here in the USA.

What is a ‘Colonia’?
THE THIRD WORLD IN THE USA

Texas Secretary of State’s Definition:

The term “colonia,” in Spanish means a community or neighborhood. The Office of the Secretary of State defines a “colonia” as a residential area along the Texas-Mexico border that may lack some of the most basic living necessities, such as potable water and sewer systems, electricity, paved roads, and safe and sanitary housing.

In recent years the Texas-Mexico border region has experienced an explosion of growth in population and industrial activity. Although growth has resulted in economic opportunities, it has also intensified the environmental health and social challenges.

Among the border states, Texas has the largest number of colonias approximately 1,800 communities, with more than 500,000 residents. Sixty-five percent of all residents, and 85% of residents under the age of 18, were born in the United States. (aka Anchor babies) These Americans live in extreme poverty and often are unaware of the services that the United States and Texas can provide for them. Education is a key to addressing the problems faced by colonia residents, but reaching out to these communities poses unique challenges that require unique approaches.

Ninety-eight percent of the residents are Hispanic and speak little or no English.

“Illegals are not immigrants. They are colonists”

Squatter is more fitting.

“One who settles on the lands of others without any legal authority; this term is applied particularly to persons who settle on the public land.”

Terrorism is more accurate.

“the calculated use of violence (or the threat of violence) against civilians in order to attain goals that are political or religious or ...

As mentioned, I have lived in Southern California (South Bay area of Los Angeles County to be precise) since 1976. In those 34 years, I have NEVER heard anyone who lives here call the state “Cali.” Not once. Further, I have never seen that term used in print in any newspaper or magazine in this state. The only place I have ever seen “Cali” used is here on FreeRepublic and a couple of other forums, usually in a snarky, negative way by people who live elsewhere.
California has effed-up politics and politicians, to be sure, but the state, itself, is beautiful and extremely important to the rest of the country in several ways, including in economics, agriculture, high-tech, and aerospace, just to name four.

Furthermore, if one looks at most post-election red/blue maps of California counties, they would see that the majority of the state votes Republican most of the time. Los Angeles, San Francisco and Santa Barbara counties dominate state elections, and they consistently go Democrat. A couple of other counties along the border and up along the northern-most cost near Oregon also tend Dem most of the time, but they are sparsely populated. If Republicans were able to swing Santa Barbara County and some of those smaller Dem-trending counties, Republicans would win big in this state.

I just get so sick and tired of FReepers, mostly from other states, who denigrate California solely due to politics. There is vastly more to this state than politics.

Hurrah

California is indeed, one of the garden spots of the world.

But getting more dangerous by the day thanks to the Dems and our southern friends who illegally arrive at the rate of what, 5,000 a day? 10,000? More?

I weep for my state and my country, which both were once so beautiful.

I have no way to dispute your claim. However, lord knows how many hundreds, if not thousands of Californians I’ve encountered since 1976. I can only repeat the truth that not once in over three decades have I heard a single person living here refer to the state as “Cali.” Haven’t even heard that term used on the hundreds of television shows that originate from here; not on radio either.

In print, CA, Cal. and Calif. are the common abbreviations. SoCal is common for Southern California, and I’ve heard people refer to San Bernardino as San Berdoo, Orange County as OC, San Francisco as Frisco, Los Angeles as L.A., and, of course, Los Angeles International Airport as LAX

You are right Wolfie

I have never never never in 50 years heard it called that not even once.

Thank you. You're 50 years beats my 34, and I think our combined 84 years in California trumps the anecdotes of others. :)

Regarding what you said about our political mess and the illegals, I could not agree with you more. Los Angeles, San Francisco and Santa Barbara counties dominate politics in this state. Wish that is wasn't so.

I worry more about the reality that promotes those names than I do about the names themselves. I’ve lived here long enough to remember what SoCal looked like before it became graffiti covered gang infested Occupied California.
