Laura Bush Supports Gay Marriage, Abortion

Former first lady Laura Bush has broken with her husband on the premier social issues of his administration and said she backs gay marriage and abortion.

After more than eight years of silence on the controversial issues, Mrs. Bush said in an interview with CNN's Larry KingTuesday, that gay marriage and abortion were points of contention with her husband, former President George W. Bush.

Mrs. Bush in recent weeks has been promoting her memoir "Spoken from the Heart," in which she writes about her life both before and after becoming first lady.

In response to a question about gay marriage, she said, "There are a lot of people who have trouble coming to terms with that because they see marriage as traditionally between a man and a woman. But I also know that, you know, when couples are committed to each other and love each other, that they ought to have, I think, the same sort of rights that everyone has."

Mrs. Bush said she and the ex-president "disagree" on legalizing same-sex marriage.

VERY sad and I expect true.

I think DC is infested with an excessive amount of such alternative life style people in the staffer ranks.

She is either telegraphing her ENTIRE family’s point of view or she was only Republican by marriage.

she supported her husband and was rewarded with the staff position of first lady.

We do not elect supreme court nominees or the presidential cabinet. If she had come out with this social poop during the primary then GWBush would not be president x43.

Former vs. Ex -- something like the former Marine and Ex-Marine I wonder.

"ex-" has the connotation of shame attached to it, IMO. "Former" has the connotation of honor, and still honorable.

Think of the differences between Oliver North and John Murtha.

Just a way the media gets in their digs at Dubya. Nothing new.

WRONG!

Men are more likely to be pro-abortion than women.

The picture on her book cover is kind of creepy or is that just a bad picture?

Your right. I just looked it up.

Actually, you’re only TECHNICALLY right as the numbers are about the same (they are within the margin of error) but the point is the support is about the same for both men and women so I was wrong.

I’ll modify my position.

Abortion will not be illegal until the majority of women OPPOSE it.

Laura's my wife's name and her views are similar to hers.

Like they say, you can't choose your own family, especially with your wife.

Seriously, I was the liberal and she the conservative when we met; now it's the opposite.

Finally, recall when W's statement during his first term, "...reasonable people can disagree...but..." (on abortion in general) before condemning late term abortion?

Not a shock. All of the Bush females are liberals it seems. I think even GW was more of a social liberal than he let on, he just played the base.

Laura Bush's book cover pic

Neither to me, just VERY close up. At least you can see life in her eyes, unlike "Dead as a shark's eyes" Obama and his wife! I swear sometimes the two of them look like they grace Tussaud's in their spare time.

I don't think you're permitted, as per the rules of FR, to do what you just did, homophobe.

The only one who does "soap opera" here, is your little gang of rule breakers. I'm not playing your game any more.

The gig is up, kiddo. The gang has been busted.

Not surprised.

The GOP uses conservatives, much like the DNC uses minorities.

None of this is new information. Laura has some serious growing to do in these areas.

None of that changes the fact that her husband was the most solidly pro-life President we have ever has, and has been honored for that by pro-life groups.

btw, her book is AWESOME, and should be read to get a real picture of who these dear people really are.

Not even close to the truth.

George W. Bush is deeply committed to the pro-life cause and has chosen to continue that in his post-presidency.

You're getting some bad information somewhere.

it is not just the politicians, it is the STAFFERS who run the politicians. Specter was a RINO and had a full on staff of homosexuals and liberals.

Mark Foley...nuff said.

Charlie Crist ..... nuff said x2.

It is NOT enough to eliminate the politicial by election. The staffers they hire must be a front and center issue.

How many “fancy boys or girls” does Laura bush have on staff?

McCain is has had (has?) a few in his campaigns.

Finally, recall when W's statement during his first term, "...reasonable people can disagree...but..." (on abortion in general) before condemning late term abortion?

Bush always clear on abortion issue including 'late term/partial birth abortions':

*****

Good people can disagree; but let’s value life

I will lead our nation toward a culture that values life -- the life of the elderly and the sick, the life of the young, and the life of the unborn. I know good people disagree on this issue, but surely we can agree on ways to value life by promoting adoption and parental notification, and when Congress sends me a bill against partial-birth abortion, I will sign it into law. Source: Speech to Republican National Convention Aug 3, 2000

*****************

I know we need to ban partial-birth abortions. . . I believe banning partial-birth abortion would be a positive step toward reducing the number of abortions in America. This is an issue that’s going to require a new attitude. We’ve been battling over abortion for a long period of time. Surely this nation can come together to promote the value of life.Source: Presidential debate, Boston MA Oct 3, 2000

Glad you and Laura (wife)are close to same page. . .makes for an easier 'read' for sure./;^)/
