Greenland Rising Rapidly as Ice Melts
LiveScience.com ^ | 5/18/10

Posted on 05/18/2010 2:24:44 PM PDT by NormsRevenge

The ice is melting so fast in Greenland that the giant island is rising noticeably as the weight is lifted. In some spots, the land is rising 1 inch per year.

A vast ice cap covers much of Greenland, in some places up to 1.2 miles (2 km) thick. The ice, in place for eons, presses down the land, making the elevation at any given point lower than it would be sans ice.

Scientists have documented on Greenland and elsewhere that when longstanding ice melts away, the land rebounds. Even the European Alps are rising as glaciers melt.

Now, scientists at the University of Miami say Greenland's ice is melting so quickly that the land underneath is rising at an accelerated pace.

Some coastal areas are going up by nearly 1 inch per year, the scientists announced today. If current trends continue, that could accelerate to as much as 2 inches per year by 2025, said Tim Dixon, professor of geophysics at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) and principal investigator of the study.

"It's been known for several years that climate change is contributing to the melting of Greenland's ice sheet," Dixon said in a statement. "What's surprising, and a bit worrisome, is that the ice is melting so fast that we can actually see the land uplift in response."

Dixon added: "Even more surprising, the rise seems to be accelerating, implying that melting is accelerating."

Anybody believe this? Is this undersea volcanoes or something? Can’t be climate change - the world is cooling.

Last time that happened (when the ice age ended) as greenland rose England got lower (they found a stone age city, dwellings, animal bones, etc in the water between England and Europe). I only mention this because this will probably be brought up to prove their climate theories.

Similar to the Guam tipping problem. Whoever fixed that should be called in here.

There are no starving Polar Bears on that ice. Obviously a fake.

Oh, it's true. But what they don't mention is that Greenland has been rising since the end of the last Ice Age - more than 10,000 years ago. So is much of Canada, and for the same reason. The tremendous weight of the ice sheets pressed the continental crust down into the mantle.

If true, I see this as a net positive.

A couple of years ago I saw an article (probably here at FR) about agriculture in Greenland. A guy there was starting to farm land that hadn't been farmed in a thousand years, and was making money and buying up more land. The temp average had gone up over the years something like a degree and a half, but that was enough to make the difference.

Another degree or so of warming would turn much of this earth into a paradise.

What the hell happened to the “we’re all going to die due to the melting ice-caps” Leftist theory of relativity?” How can this land be rising faster than the water?

And while we’re discussing this, could it just be that the earth may be rising because of sub-terrainian thrust, instead of reduced weight?

As for the Alps, seriously folks... give it a rest you lefties. Mountain ranges are known to rise due to tectonic shifts causing upward thrust.

Is this a joke? I thought that when all the ice melted, the seas would rise and drown out the coastlines. Am I right? This sounds like crazy science to me.

We obviously need more weight on Greenland. Can someone get Al Gore to move there?

Glad you mentioned that. Do you think the tip should be based on the bill before taxes, or after? What percent for large parties?

“Is this undersea volcanoes or something?”

It’s called isostatic rebound. it’s been going on in many places since the last ice Age ended. it’s the major reason the Great Lakes are draining, teh land is rising up.

http://www.maine.gov/doc/nrimc/mgs/explore/marine/facts/sea-02.htm

Follow this chart back to the source and they explain that some of the “sea level change” logged on the coast of Maine is the land bobbing UP as the glacier melted.
