Joe Kittenger already did it in 1960 from 102,000 feet;
I don’t believe he broke the sound barrier, and I’m skeptical this guy will either. He’s jumping from three miles higher up, but I think Kittenger’s jump established that terminal velocity in that part of the “atmosphere” is well below the speed of sound. We’ll see.
Kittinger and Baumgartner are partnering in this venture, sponsored by Red Bull. I saw them on TV together, doing a joint interview. Baumgartner is giving total “you the man” props to Kittinger, and Kittinger is thrilled to be back in the limelight. BOth seem like classy guys with big nads.
