“Military Clashes between Hamas Activists and Israel on the Mediterranean Sea Likely by Month’s End”
by IPT News • May 28, 2010 at 1:52 pm

SNIPPET: “With organizers of the “Freedom Flotilla” determined to violate Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip, it appears more and more likely that the incident may escalate into a military confrontation between Israel and the ruling Hamas regime in Gaza.

Earlier this week, seven senior ministers of the Israeli government announced that Israel will block the ships from entering Gaza and will direct them to the Israeli port city of Ashdod by force, if necessary.

Following the announcement, on Thursday, Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Director General met with the ambassadors of Turkey, Cyprus, Sweden, Ireland and Greece—the countries of departure for the eight ships carrying about 10,000 tons of humanitarian and 750 activists. Israel again invited the organizers to dock at the Ashdod port and offered to transfer the cargo to Gaza, after appropriate examination, in accordance with Israeli and international law. Cyprus is the only country that decided to ban any ships from sailing from its shores.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry stated that if Israel’s offer to flotilla leaders is rejected it will “use all the means at its disposal” to prevent the ships from entering the port, although Israel hopes to avoid the use of force.”

Hamas Official: We Will Not Relinquish Our Arms, Nor a Single Grain of Palestinian Soil

In a May 27, 2010 meeting with senior Hamas clerics, Hamas official in Gaza Salah Al-Bardawil said that the movement would not relinquish its arms and would not negotiate over a single grain of Palestinian soil, and that its strategy is based upon resistance.

He added that Hamas is working to encourage resistance in the West Bank, and has recently formed ties with many elements worldwide to alleviate the siege on Gaza.

He also referred to the Egyptian reconciliation document, saying that this document is impossible to implement and that Hamas has suspended its efforts in this domain.

“Militants Aboard Flotilla Open Fire on IDF Soldiers”

by Rachel Sylvetsky and Eli Stutz

SNIPPET: “The IDF reports that the crew of the Gaza-bound flotilla lay in wait for the IDF to board their vessel and then attacked IDF soldiers, opening fire on them. One crew member reportedly snatched a gun from an IDF soldier and then opened fire on the troops. Another soldier was stabbed in the stomach with a sharp object. The soldier is in moderate condition and was transferred for medical treatment by helicopter to Rambam Hospital in Haifa. Doctors there determined he would require surgery. Three other soldiers were also wounded and were transferred to Tel Hashomer hospital.

According to the IDF spokesperson, the crew of the flotilla were not peaceful humanitarians, but rather militants who were preparing for provocation and violence, and were planning to stage a “lynch” of the Israeli soldiers.”
