President Obama urged reluctant lawmakers Saturday to quickly approve nearly $50 billion in emergency aid to state and local governments, saying the money is needed to avoid "massive layoffs of teachers, police and firefighters" and to support the still-fragile economic recovery.
In a letter to congressional leaders, Obama defended last year's huge economic stimulus package, saying it helped break the economy's freefall, but argued that more spending is urgent and unavoidable. "We must take these emergency measures," he wrote in an appeal aimed primarily at members of his own party.
The letter comes as rising concern about the national debt is undermining congressional support for additional spending to bolster the economy. Many economists say more spending could help bring down persistently high unemployment, but with Republicans making an issue of the record deficits run up during the recession, many Democratic lawmakers are eager to turn off the stimulus tap.

c’mon folks, sell your cars and give me the money
He is not doing such a good job, is he? Lol!
No.
No - no more bribes. Cut red tape and give us jobs, brainiac.
Just why is nobama pleading for anything???? He is our ultimate ruler and can do what ever he wants to do...can’t he????? Such a genius is this nobama. nobama sees all.
Here we go....
It used to be the “we’re going to lose teachers/police/firefighters if we don’t...” line was used by state and local govts who didn’t want to cut back on their bloated budgets.
Now we have Obama towing the line. This and his recent a$$ kicking comment further demonstrate that he is not cut out for the job.
Why can’t he just get the money from his “stash”?
Money to bail out union jobs!
Read our lips Mr. President and Congress........
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO
Get rid of the teachers unions, tenure, and pay them based upon performance.
We need to impeach Obama, try him for treason and send him to Gitmo to rot with his buddies.
All this achieved was enabling the State and Local governments to reallocate the money they would have spent on those items towards preserving government jobs. So when they should have been belt tightening (like private Americans) they continued on business as normal or in some cases spending sprees.
I have watched many private industry participants cut by 30% or more. As far as I am concerned Government could do at least 15% - 20% and if the classrooms get crowded or fewer misdemeanor crimes slip by the cops, so be it.
These unions are screwed when Conservatives finally turn off the money spigot.
the economy CANNOT recover with all these bailout, because this money has to come from somewhere right? Bailing out the teachers unions means denying resources from other sector of the economy from investing to grow the economy. You can’t invest and spend the same money
Even at the local level towns do this.
They use the scare, "We'll fire all the popular public employees", when actually they mean,"We'll save the union dues-paying administrators and jobsworth parasites".
Bingo! If we've learned anything since the formation of the Department of (re)Education in 1978 it is that Federal control of the gubmint skools are one of the main reasons why the country is swirling in the toilet. Try actually teaching Math, Science, HISTORY, critical thinking, pride in citizenship, and problem solving instead of ethnic studies, "diversity", how to put a condom on a banana and other such mind rotting garbage and watch the country boom again.....
Ping for later read.
They can get the $50 billion from wasteful pork spending in the stimulus bill. A big part of the stimulus bill is aid to states and local governments to pay for teachers, police, and firefighters. But they didn’t allocate enough for teachers, police, and firefighters because they spent way too much on pork to benefit numerous democrat constituencies. At this point the administration has about $175 billion left in stimulus spending, so they should just cut $50 of pork spending and reallocate that money to help local government pay for teachers, police, and firefighters. We’re already running a massive budget deficit and we all have to pay taxes in the future to pay the interest on all that debt, so let’s just move funds from non-essential spending in the stimulus into assistance for local government.
And don't think for a minute that the unions don't know that, either. Remember the little $10 million tiff last week between the Whitehouse and the unions? I predict a lot more "tiffs" in the near future as the election approaches.....
