Gulf Oil Spill Fuels Push for High-speed Rail in Wisconsin
WBAY ^ | June 16, 2010 | ???

A group drumming up support for high-speed rail in Wisconsin says the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is more proof we need to break away from our dependency on oil.

Wisconsin Student Public Interest Research Group, or WISPIRG, stopped in Green Bay Wednesday on a statewide tour.

The consumer group made up primarily of college students and researchers says connecting Wisconsin cities by high-speed rail will reduce traffic congestion and pollution and create 9,000 permanent jobs.

"WISPIRG is calling on Congress to dedicate funding to passenger rail in the next six-year federal transportation bill which will be taken up next year, so we can build the system Wisconsin needs and our country deserves," the group's Sarah Seibold said.

WISPIRG says high-speed rail is 23-percent more fuel efficient than flying and up to 50-percent more fuel efficient than driving.

It's BP's fault.

They worried that the spill will be coming ashore in Wisconsin?

Wisconsin? Yeah that’s the first place I think of to optimize high speed rail.

Wow. Those numbers are underwhelming. WHen I see weasel words like "UP TO" than I know that it will be significantly less. UP TO means full trains in each direction, every ride. Ain't gonna happen.

Do these morons not realize that trains run on diesel fuel which is made from oil? How frigging stupid are these choo-choo people?

Unless of course they're talking about those magical, mythical high speed trains that run on Unicorn farts....

Because BART is such a rousing success.

The sole purpose of Metropolitan Transportation Districts is to provide affirmative-actioned "people of color" a means of stealing as much public dollars as they can stuff into their pockets.

That tells you all you need to know about them.

What, power your high-speed rail with wind power?

I have an idea Sarah. Why don't you raise your own capital, build yourself a railroad, sell tickets and send the government a bunch of money in taxes like the rest of us commuters do?

Trains are SO much more efficient, you should be able to pay more taxes than drivers pay and still make a tidy little bundle of money for yourself.

The great light rail boondoggle... Build a light rail 12 miles long that carries 5,000 or 6,000 passengers per day, and costs $1 billion to build and runs an operating budget deficit of $100’s of millions per year. While an adjacent highway carries 50,000 people per day at a small fraction of the cost. Utopia lives on...

...and the "driving" comparison assumes everyone rides solo in their H2 or Escalade, at either 5 or 95 mph.

Isn't LibMath fun?!?

9,000 permanent UNION jobs with no reason to make profits and huge drains on tax dollars for fat, bloated salaries, benefits and pensions.

Just like the BART or MUNI a-wipes here in the Bay Area...over budget and the only thing they will cut is services...the $150K fat salaried jackasses have the unions to hold the taxpayers hostage.

Local news here covered a Pittsburgh bus driver who made $131,000 last year. (they exploit union rules to rack up tons of overtime). Funny TV story, interviewing a young black girl on her way to a fast food job, explaining that this is why the fares are going up. She was flummoxed.
