NRA sells out freedom with separate deal on the DISCLOSE Act
American Thinker ^ | June 16, 2010 | Mark J. Fitzgibbons

But for a few well-placed, freedom-loathing, wretched scoundrels (translate: Democratic members of Congress and their allies in Washington), anyone and everyone familiar with the DISCLOSE Act opposes it.

The DISCLOSE Act is the Obama-Pelosi-Reid legislative response to the Citizens United decision allowing nonprofit organizations, corporations and labor unions to pay for ads opposing or supporting candidates.

Let me be clear: the Citizens United decision will help challengers to incumbents because the campaign finance rules were written by incumbents, and are therefore rigged for incumbents.

My friends at the Free Speech Coalition prepared this good summary of the bill as it was introduced. The bill targets free speech.

The National Rifle Association was stellar in opposition to the attempt by Congress to regulate grassroots lobbying when Congress amended the K Street lobbying rules a few years back. In fact, the NRA was critical in persuading certain Democrats, including Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, to ensure the grassroots provisions were kept out of the lobbying bill.

Democrats knew that if they could buy off the NRA, they stood a better chance of passing the DISCLOSE Act.

Sadly, the NRA has sold us out on the DISCLOSE Act, and has obtained its own exemption.

Washington politicians engage in disgraceful horse-trading over all sorts of things. Now, with the help of the NRA, our speech, association and press freedoms are open to bidding.

Well said....The NRA has my support as well as the GOA.

The only reliable defender of your gun right is your gun and your willingness to use it against anyone who comes for it.

All else is whining.

Am I wrong?

Yes, you are.

You paid the NRA to look out for your Second Amendment rights, not the interests of other political action groups. You paid them to secure your right to keep and bear arms, not address abortion, prayer in schools, fiscal policy, foreign policy, gay marriage, or any other issue. You paid them to exert as much influence as possible in Washington on your behalf, not the Republican Party's behalf. You paid them to be pro-gun, not conservative, liberal, or any other political ideology.

The NRA is doing exactly what you paid them to do. If you prefer an organization that promotes the interests of the GOP, then you'll have to find another group. Of course, that group, whoever they may be, will sell out your gun rights in a heartbeat, but if that fits in with your priorities...

The GOA is the only ‘no compromise’ gun rights organization.

But it’s OK for sasquatch to question the hundred years of patriotism of the NRA?

Again you are an idiot. The NRA is nothing more than a lobbying organization that is all about keeping the nice building and the expense accounts

And yes Sasquatch can question their motives BECASUE they are the ones going around with their hands out asking for hard earned money from patriots and then squandering it on stupid moves liek this one.

Notice to the NRA - if you are paid poster they are wasting more money- especially if you are Shooter 2.5 with a different name.

You use of the patriot variation of Goodwin's Law means you automatically lose the argument.

Please stop, you’re hurting my feelings.

The NRA has done much over the years, and we likely wouldn’t have a second amendment if it weren’t for them. They are a single issue organization that tries to keep as many democrats on board as they can, just for times like we are having right now. They are not in line with everyone’s conservative ideals, and never will be.

Go pound sand!

I was an NRA member in the past, but decided not to renew for one simple reason: background checks. There is no denying the NRA has done much good work; one specific example that comes to mind is their tireless work on behalf of New Orleans residents who were disarmed and left to rot when an out-of-control police department used a natural disaster as an excuse to run amok.

That said, I prefer the no-compromise stand of the GOA. I applaud them for having the backbone to say NO to allowing the government to snoop into people’s medical history before allowing them the “privilege” of defending themselves. It is true that we need to keep firearms out of the hands of violent criminals, and the best way to do that is to keep the bastards locked up. Convicted murderers and child molesters should never be allowed to see the light of day - no parole, nothing! Lesser scoundrels should also be kept off the streets until they are deemed to pose no greater threat than the average citizen. I realize any such determination is bound to be subjective, but such is the price of freedom. The Constitution, including the Second Amendment, applies (or SHOULD apply) to all free American citizens.

As for the issue at hand, I can’t fault the NRA for their stand here. They are a single-issue gun-rights organization, as they should be. Defending other freedoms, such as the First Amendment, is the responsibility of other groups like the ACLU. So will someone please rouse THEM from their slumber?

Does this mean (as the name Disclose suggests) that the source of funds spent to promote a for-or-against position on an issue will be made "public"? I don't have a problem with that.

Not sure what the NRA's exemption means but I use this kind of information, eg. "paid for by SIEU" means defeat at all cost.

One of the biggest problems in a society this large is information dissemination. Without 'perfect' information, flawed decisions result (see Obama, see MSM). The greatest power rests not with the Playas, but with their Promoters. Without a compliant media, this President would have been impeached last year for lack of leadership, or this year for displaying gross incompetence in dealing with an enviornmental disaster.

Imagine China and Russia and the tight controls on information. No wonder they live is such squalor and tyranny. Same with Venezuela and other banana towns where the presidente spends hours blathering on TV saying nothing (which is what our media does too).

Again, not sure what the NRA did wrong be getting an exemption, as I'd love to hear what they have to say on gun issues and would really love to hear their take on the second ammendment, if they had the balls to do it publically.

All due respect Quatch. I listened to Wayne’s response to the bill today.

It doesn’t smell good. I’m starting see why you are pissed, but it does make sense to walk away from the fight when you’re dog isn’t in it anymore.

I’m hoping that because of the convoluted nature of Washington that they weren’t positioning to come back and bite the politicians in the ass after the fact.

It’s all common sense to you and me but the bastards in DC are just that. Time will prove me right or wrong. If I’m wrong they can kiss my $’s goodbye.
