Uncle Sam Wants You to Have an Online ID
Fox News Business ^ | July 02, 2010 | Jay Bavisi co-founder of the EC-Council

As our daily interactions and transactions have become increasingly “wired,” we have yet to see any truly comprehensive attempts at securing online identities.

Our complex system of usernames and passwords is astoundingly outdated and increasingly prone to security breaches and theft. Yet, so far it has been mostly up to the individual to protect himself against various forms of identity fraud—with larger corporations taking relatively little responsibility.

But this could change in a big way. Right now the federal government is proposing a new system being referred to as the “Identity Ecosystem”—which was highlighted in the recently-released draft paper, “National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace” [NSTIC].

The Identity Ecosystem would allow Americans to choose to obtain a single authenticated ID for online transactions. Like a passport, this single ID could travel with them online and be used to access everything from e-mail, to online health records and banking information. Furthermore, the Identity Ecosystem would only reveal the least amount of information necessary for each transaction.

To highlight the potential consumer benefits of such a system, the White House’s proposal uses the example of an individual filling a prescription online. Under the “smart ID card,” the pharmacy would only receive proof that the individual is over 18 and that the prescription is valid. No other information like birth date or the reason for the prescription.

Actually, that was supposed to be two concepts. 1. I would like to leave a comment, but they want a user name and password, and 2. They have drunk the government Kool-Aid, believing that this scam isn’t a government attack on privacy.
My bad.

This ain’t Uncle Sam, it’s Big Brother Barack.”

I will cancel my internet account instantly.

I refuse to do any online banking. I order some items from catalogs-—only from about 3 places, where I trust the companies.

Other than that, Mu use of cash will increase, also. The credit cards will get paid down & I WILL wean myself from using them.

The Dems have their sights set on controlling their subjects with this sort of oppressive foolishness. The costs of maintaining and securing a national online ID would be astronomical and fraud would be rampant. Seems to be a forerunner of national voting via the internet. I’m sure Dems would love internet voting in the future as it would be infinitely susceptible to manipulation.

Same here!

I am much more at peace without the GOVERNMENT in my business. All government seems to do is literally screw things up and do the OPPOSITE of protecting and defending you.

Two days before reading this article, I read a website which said the letters used in 666 translate to www in English. That would make the internet the beast. Novel.

God, I hope that doesn't mean that he can control the internet.

Exactly. And in India the majority seems pretty excited at the prospect!!!

Resistance here would be to great for such a scheme. But...give it 10 years and I bet we’re there.

Try BugMeNot for these kind of sites - doesn't always work on the first try but usually gets you in with a little patience.

“How many months/years until they shut down FR and send us “domestic terrorists” to the work camps?”

How many months/years until patriots hunt down left-wingers and send them one-way to North Korea?

Go ahead and laugh now, I’m sure the Germans would have used this instead of all the manpower they had to devote catching Jews.

Many FReepers will cheer this when it's first used against registered sex offenders and will encourage its use against other ex-cons. And they'll be shocked and outraged when they themselves end up in the sights.

Remember, the gun control acts were only supposed to disarm ex-cons, but look at where those went.

What you do unto others will be done unto you -- sooner or later.
