Schumer: Obama’s ‘counter-productive’ Israel policy ‘has to stop’
New York Senator Chuck Schumer harshly criticized the Obama Administration’s attempts to exert pressure on Israel today, making him the highest-ranking Democrat to object to Obama’s policies in such blunt terms.
Schumer, along with a majority of members of the House and Senate, signed on to letters politely suggesting the U.S. keep its disagreements with Israel private, a tacit objection to the administration’s very public rebuke of the Jewish State over construction in Jerusalem last month.
But Schumer dramatically sharpened his tone on the politically conservative Jewish Nachum Segal Show today, calling the White House stance to date “counter-productive” and describing his own threat to “blast” the Administration had the State Department not backed down from its “terrible” tough talk toward Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Schumer, a hawkish ally of Israel since his days as a Brooklyn Congressman, described “a battle going on inside the administration” over Middle East policy.
“This has to stop,” he said of the administration’s policy of publicly pressuring Israel to end construction in Jerusalem.
“I told the President, I told Rahm Emanuel and others in the administration that I thought the policy they took to try to bring about negotiations is counter-productive, because when you give the Palestinians hope that the United States will do its negotiating for them, they are not going to sit down and talk,” Schumer told Segal. “Palestinians dont really believe in a state of Israel. They, unlike a majority of Israelis, who have come to the conclusion that they can live with a two-state solution to be determined by the parties, the majority of Palestinians are still very reluctant, and they need to be pushed to get there.
Whether Bibi will initiate a pro Israel campaign within the United States.
If Obama caves, Bibi gets what he wants. If he does not, then its the Bibi show on the road about the USA and in Washington. I look forward to that!
Thanks for filling me in on Schumer’s statements. I hope he keeps it up. The acquiescence of American Jewry to this anti-Israel administration is aggravating.
For the betterment of all, I hope he will focus on his idea's on economic growth and slam Obama for his idea's.
We need all the help we can get.
I wish Bibi would wait until after our mid-terms.
After two months of indirect talks mediated by the United States, Mr. Netanyahu told Israel's Cabinet it is time to begin face-to-face negations. The terrorist Arabs and Muzzies have been trying to carry out negations for decades. ;')
You are very welcome. I too was quite surprised at the strength of Schumer’s critique. I think overall American Jewry likes to paddle along in the liberal canal, enjoying the privileges the USA affords without wading into the morass of European anti-Semitism, etc. I think Obama is just radical enough, however, to awaken the sleeping giant. If he’s good at anything, he’s good at arousing opposition. May it come back to bite him in the posterior but good, Amen.
This is easy (and essential) for Bibi to say right now. The PA has no intention of negotiating while Obama continues to exact unilateral concessions from Israel. Obama has made it much harder to get things started. Israel has got to show they are all for negotiations and conflict resolution and ready at any time to roll up their sleeves and get to it around the negotiation table. As long O keeps painting them as the beligerents and demanding “good faith” concessions, Bibi has to show that he is actually the one who is eager to work out a solution if only the other side would show up. I’ve noticed Bibi has picked up one of Obama’s tactics. He says one thing to Obama and the media then goes ahead and actually does whatever he wants to do at home. Fire with fire.
I think we see passive resistance on that which matters not much...
“Really, really good points. But Netanyahu is one canny guy. I doubt he will capitulate.”
Photo op to get the American Jew back onto the plantation.
My faith in Bibi survives this news lead. I’ll believe Bibi caves when Bibi caves, and not a minute sooner.
Sure, zero will get all he wants from Israel, when everyone agrees to rebuild the Temple. Until then, nothing, after that, head for the hills.

Saudi Arabia needs upgrades to their F-15s.
Look for cues at their joint press conference.
Bibi will seems pleased under any circumstance. He needs to put on an act.
Obama can’t act, he doesn’t have that talent. Lie, that’s something else.
If Obama looks pleased, Israel is f**ked.
If Obama looks upset, Israel is still on its feet.
I just heard the soundbite of Obama saying the bond between the US and Israel is “unbreakable”. Vindication, baby. Go Netanyahu!
