A former bus driver has sued the Capital Area Rural Transportation System, charging that the nine-county transit service discriminated against him based on his religion when he was fired for refusing to drive a woman to a Planned Parenthood clinic in January.

“I’m surprised. I guess employer rights outweigh abortion at Freerepublic.”

Actually, the views presented are consistent with those who on other threads have stated that a Muslim store clerk must sell pork and a Muslim cab driver must transport people with alcohol.

I agree. I got the impression from the story though that they specifically told him to drive the women to the abortion clinic. That seems a little more gray to me but I still come down on the side of he is paid to do a job.

Part of the article states:

"The system offers bus service on fixed routes and through requested pickup for residents in the non-urban areas of Travis and Williamson counties and in all of Bastrop, Burnet, Blanco, Caldwell, Fayette, Hays and Lee counties."

In this particular instance the driver was dispatched as a personal taxi service, which is available in this area. He was not dropping the parties off at a bus stop. He was specifically directed to drive the parties to the abortion clinic.

I respect the gentleman standing up for his beliefs and interceding as much as possible to prevent a child's death!

I admire his stand, I also think he should lose his job if he doesn’t do it.
Sometimes taking a stand means you get bit. He got bit. buh bye Mr. Driver.

First of all, the Capital Area Rural Transportation System should be abolished as it is nothing but highly subsidized personal transit service for those who elect to live way out in the banjo picking Austin exurbs.

“I respect the gentleman standing up for his beliefs and interceding as much as possible to prevent a child’s death!”

If he feels so strongly about standing up for his belief, he should not protest losing his job and the bottom line is that he has little indication that the woman was going to Planed Parenthood to seek an abortion.

Or when a leftie at a book store won't let you purchase a conservative book.

Been there! The impending meeting with his supervisor was fun!

Agreed. Though I admire his morals, it is akin to the Somali cabbies refusing to pick up passengers who have seeing eye dogs, etc.

your argument is logical except for one thing.

Selling (or not) books or certain types of food is not a life/death issue.

and two wrongs don’t make a right, anyway. (or three, as the case may be)
